Trump meets 5 African leaders tomorrow. His new total is now 9 presidents in the Oval. (He met with Ramaphosa in May and 3 leaders in his first term.). My updated graphic shows an increase in his time with Africans from .03 to 0.7 % of total working days.

Since the end of the Cold War, U.S. presidents have used signature initiatives to signal commitment and craft their legacy in Africa. I explain why some endure and others fade away in my new substack post.

“For us, the idea of a nation is more than just a territory,” he said. “It would be very difficult to survive without its diaspora.” . Fascinating reflections from Pedro Pires, Cabo Verde's first prime minister and later one of its presidents.

This was a great conversation, dissecting the issues defining the past, present, and future of U.S.-Africa relations. Plus, a little on my own career at the CIA and in the White House.

In the U.S. Strategy Toward Sub-Saharan Africa, I wrote about engaging with African leaders: “when we have disagreements, we will lean in, agree to meet, and discuss differences head-on.” . In my new substack, I explain why it was so difficult to do.
