We stand against this law, as well as the government's most recent cruel proposals. People have always moved and they always will. We should be proud to welcome people here, and support them to rebuild their lives. [6/6]

Alongside this, the Act will also allow the government to detain people they are merely thinking about deporting, without any good reason - a cruel and inhumane extension of the existing detention estate. [5/6]

Similarly broad interpretations of 'supplying' and 'handling' articles for use in immigration 'crime' will criminalise people for normal actions taken in the course of these dangerous crossings. [4/6]

Yet this Act criminalises people for the very act of seeking safety, such as an incredibly broad definition of 'endangering another during sea crossing'. [3/6]

The government does not provide any safe routes for people to move freely, forcing people to take dangerous routes across the Channel. [2/6]

While they talk about numbers, people are living with crumbling housing, rising prices and a cost of living crisis that deepens each month. We need to stop playing along with the hate. Movement is human. People move. We always have and we always will.

Some politicians and media outlets have spread misinformation and falsehoods and sought to scapegoat migrants for their own ends. This fixation is a distraction at its core and keeps migration at the centre of debate while real issues are pushed aside.

Net migration is a simple measure of how many people come and how many leave. It is not a crisis and it is not something to celebrate. But the government treats it as both, stoking a panic of its own making.
