This #ScienceSunday we're tracking #CoastalErosion at Pioneer Bay with @jcu undergrad Luna Stjernstrom 🌊. Recent high tides, strong winds & tropical lows are reshaping the shore. Luna joined OIRS to deploy sensors & support research led by Dr Scott Smithers 🐚📡 #MarineScience

Did you know manta rays have unique spot patterns on their bellies, like fingerprints? This weekend, we think we sighted a new manta ray in the Palm Islands but compared it to “Jayden” (number 1261), first seen in 1968! We’ve submitted the sighting to @ProjectManta!

Happy #ScienceSunday! This month marks the humpback whale journey northward past OIRS to warmer breeding grounds. Mothers nurture calves, while males compete in "heat runs" for mating opportunities, showcasing strength through behaviors like tail-slapping and breaching 🐋🌊

#ScienceSunday by @bridgetleibold from @scienceANU Coral Reef Studies (EMSC3019): We collected leaf samples from mangroves at different depths/times of day to analyse patterns in salinity. Young leaves had the highest salinity and closed stomata at low tide conserving freshwater.
