Displaced Afghans would face violence, persecution, and brutal repression at the hands of the Taliban if returned. DHS's decision to terminate TPS undermines international protection efforts and exposes vulnerable people to grave and irreversible human rights abuses. 2/3.

JBI opposes DHS’s decision to terminate Temporary Protected Status for Afghanistan. It defies reality; places thousands of Afghan nationals residing in the U.S. at risk of suffering grave harm; and could incentivize other governments to similarly jeopardize their safety. 1/3

More broadly, the U.S. review should affirm that human rights work, particularly to counter practices that fuel suffering and instability like persecution of dissenters and religious, ethnic, and other minorities, sexual violence, and forced labor, advances U.S. security.

The U.S. State Department should ensure support for human rights work can resume expeditiously and mitigate the negative consequences of this misguided process. Urgent action should also ensure Congressionally-mandated funding is expeditiously released.

This freeze and the ongoing U.S. review of foreign assistance is imperiling defenders' vital efforts to monitor and report on conditions in many repressive countries - not only North Korea, but also Iran, China, and beyond, and risks causing substantial long-term harm. 2/4.

We share the alarm expressed today by the UN Special Rapporteur on human rights in North Korea that the vital work of human rights defenders is being jeopardized by an abrupt freeze in financial support for their activities, which benefit us all. 1/4

Reforms to U.S. immigration policy should adhere to our international obligations to provide asylum-seekers with access to fair and efficient procedures; they should not have the effect of expelling or returning people to situations where they face a real risk of harm. 2/2.

We are alarmed at reports that U.S. authorities have transferred dozens of migrants from countries including Iran and China, many of whom were seeking asylum, to Panama. Irregular detention could lead to their transfer into potentially dangerous conditions. 1/2.

On this Holocaust Remembrance Day, we affirm our responsibility, to the victims, survivors, and future generations, to continue to press the organization founded in its wake to recognize the danger of and confront surging antisemitism and to better protect the rights of all. 6/6.

We were encouraged by @RepDanGoldman’s support for a bipartisan initiative in the U.S. Congress to audit and improve Holocaust education nationwide. 4/6.

We were inspired by the Claims Conference's efforts to correct glaring deficits in Holocaust knowledge described by @GideonTaylorNY, including through classical and new educational techniques to counter increasingly widespread Holocaust denial, distortion, and inversion. 3/6.

Holocaust survivor Gabriella Major, who spent her life combating hate, recounted that her grandchild recently felt “unsafe, unable to study and live” due to campus antisemitism, and “it brought me back to the experiences my parents and others had in the 1930s in Europe.” 2/6.

At our event marking International Holocaust Remembrance Day, Prof. Rosa Freedman recalled that former JBI Director Felice Gaer’s conviction that UN leaders must be pressed to counter antisemitism and act in line with the promise of universal human rights is imperative today. 1/6

Redoubled efforts are also urgently needed to end the immense suffering and risk of harm that all civilians face, including also from the SAF’s indiscriminate attacks and failure to hold abusers accountable. All of Sudan's people deserve to enjoy peace, security, and rights.

The US determination that the RSF is committing genocide in Sudan is important & others should echo it. More critically, the int'l community must act with greater urgency to curb ethnically targeted killings, rape, & attacks aimed at the destruction of non-Arab groups in Darfur.

Today, as we mark the Genocide Convention's 76th anniversary, we recall and pledge to carry forward former JBI Director Felice Gaer's exhortation: ."We must not resign ourselves to apathy and indifference. Humanity cannot and must not relinquish the fight against genocide."

Shany counsels international law-appliers to use restraint & make nuanced rather than radical legal claims, as the latter lead States to adopt more confrontational positions towards international law & impede efforts to challenge their commission of even clear-cut violations. 2/2.

In a new JBI Lecture, Prof. @yuvalshany1 warns "International law is not a suicide pact" & that assertion of dubious legal claims that are agnostic to the real world challenges facing States is weakening compliance & confidence in the rule-based order. See
