You can have all the education. You can be "right" about everything. But until you organize with real people in real communities, and engage with all the complexities - you'll never fully understand our people's needs and how to effectively fulfill them.

I started talking about texturism , colorism, featurism, and she blocked me immediately. y’all are not serious or truthful about these conversations at all.

And African and Caribbean people have to acknowledge and deconstruct their internalized anti-blackness and xenophobia as well. Everybody needs to go outside, touch grass and heal.

And because of these experiences of being AA, but *perceived* as African or Caribbean - I’m not gonna let y’all gaslight us into ignoring the internal xenophobia in our community and yes, it is getting worse and we have to acknowledge it.

I got people in my mentions now calling me tether/African booty scratcher like it’s 1995 and these are other AAs bc they *think* I’m an immigrant. And this is not new to me as a dark skinned Black woman from the Deep South with Gullah Geechee heritage.

For how many decades have we rejected each other for being too black or having too much nappy hair or for looking a certain way as someone on here said recently “exaggerated features.” AFRICAN.

OK, let’s talk about it. There are certainly some African and Caribbean folks that are xenophobic, but we’re not gonna act like xenophobia doesn’t exist in the African American community either and the way it plays out is often through texturism, colorism, and featurism.

Years ago, I attended a conference at Medgar Evers College where ppl from across the Diaspora were able to have private cross-cultural dialogue about differences and similarities. And it was really incredible. I think we need something like that outside of these toxic spaces.
