I feel like this was a success last year. Let's roll call again.
Underrepresented folks on the 2023-2024 job markets in social psychology & management/OB, please reply with some info about you & a link to your website (make one if you haven’t yet!) Good luck!
I’m getting emails asking me who’s on the market.

“The CDC…finds that over 140,000 children lost one or both of their parents or caregivers to Covid through the end of June…More than half the children who lost a primary caregiver during the pandemic are Black & Hispanic…support for these children is scarce & services limited”
The moment we've all been waiting for!!
On this first day of Black History Month, I'm thrilled to announce that I've accepted an offer to join the Management & Organizations Department at the Kellogg School of Management at Northwestern University!! 1/
I see white people asking Black people to name names in the replies to
#BlackInTheIvory
tweets & I'm like huh? You know this is dangerous. Plus, you're there when A LOT of academic racism happens & too often do NOTHING but maybe reach out to the target after the incident. 1/2
Today was my official first day as a professor. In the midst of a global pandemic, quaratine, cancelled plans and celebrations, and limits on time in community. Plus, police brutality and protests. It's rough.
What are some of the sayings your advisors often said that have stuck with you?
For some reason today this one plays in my mind:
“When it’s your turn to be asshole, don’t.”
If you want to blast the racists in your field, why dont you do it? Otherwise, read the stories, lament, & commit to enforcing norms that would make this shit unacceptable. 2/2
I barely have words. With annoying frequency,
@Yale
allows racist, fucked up shit to make me embarrassed to be an alumna.
The message this sends to junior faculty of color is galling.
Thank you Michael for ALL your work: your research, your mentorship, and your example.
Some news: yesterday I learned that, by faculty vote, my bid for tenure/promotion was not approved.
I feel many things, but not shame or regret. I am so proud of our work during our time at yale, and angry that this version of that work will come to an end, this end.
New paper alert! If you can't access it, it's on my website. With excellent coauthors

You may be familiar with the work we've been doing to document misperceptions of racial economic equality. 1/
My first brown bag as a faculty member is tomorrow! For the Northwestern Psychology department, where I was a summer research fellow 10 (!) years ago.
#FullCircle
Honored (again 😊) to be selected as a Rising Star by APS!
The conference is in Chicago this year and just after my birthday so all attendees are welcome to extra celebrate me.
I did the dissertation I did because when I was lamenting the murder of Michael Brown, a White friend used implicit bias as an explanation, essentially mitigating Darren Wilson's responsibility for the murder. Anyway, I guess all the more reason I need to keep doing my work.
In the midst of a VERY stressful and overwhelming quarter (I just recovered from COVID 😞)... This was such great news to receive.
Shoutout to the other winners and especially the two other Black women SAGE Early Career Trajectory Award winners!! 💪🏿💪🏿💪🏿
@Sakiera_Hudson
I’m doing me. We could take all their soul crushing advice and still not be tenured (but have a crushed soul!). I’m gonna do what is sustainable and works for me and if that gets me there cool, if not, no worries. I’ll do something else. I’m irreplaceable but this job isn’t 🤷🏾♀️
Posting late but the Nigerian aunties are proud(er) of me!
I’ll be spending next academic year
@HarvardHBS
as a Racial Equity Fellow with the Institute for the Study of Business in Global Society!
I’m excited to move my research forward & connect with friends new and old ❤️
Pulled up to New Haven cuz big sis
@Ivuoma
was honored with the Revolution Award at the
#YaleAFAM50
. Beautiful event and salute to 50 years of black excellence at the house.
Today I left CT to start my dream job and life in Chicago, IL. These are really odd circumstances under which to make a transition, but I'm super grateful for the community that loved me so well over the last 3 years/my whole life.
Watch this space for exciting news tomorrow!
.
@drevvycarter
and I were awarded the Service to SPSP Award by
@SPSPnews
for BlaSPR (the Black Social and Personality Psychologists Retreat). It's been an honor to coordinate the program and we're so grateful to be recognized by our professional society. To filling the pipeline!
I need you all to know that i didn't even want to do my long run this weekend & then I was like am I really going to break my 5 week streak?? so tonight I went on my assigned 3m run. I did the extra .1 for a 5K & ran the whole thing w/o stopping. I have NEVER run 3.1m straight.
I’m getting emails asking me who’s on the market.

She said we're going to use MONEY to hold hospitals ACCOUNTABLE for ensuring you SURVIVE childbirth!!!
I don't think people understand how scary the pieces about black maternal mortality have been for those of us who may give birth in this country. Thank you for having a PLAN.
Black moms in our country are dying from childbirth-related causes 3-4 times more often than white moms. Any meaningful solution to our maternal mortality crisis must address structural racism as a root cause of this problem. My new idea would tackle this crisis head on.
Remember when everyone was "looking for their Barack"? Maybe now people will be looking for their Kamala.
Ambitious, fly Black women, get ready! It's our time!
This situation is serious & disturbing (bring back Laura King as editor at POPS). I have to commend Steven for the execution of this response. The fact that I could get the gist & be appalled in the first few pages but if I read to the end, it was WORSE?
Guess what friends? I get to stay at Yale for 2 more years!
After 2 honorable mentions for the grad fellowship, NSF finally made our relationship official. Here's to many more...
I've had such a good time bringing in 32. To more life and more love in the next year. I am all about extended celebrations so if you're in Chicago, let's keep the party going! 🥳
I often marvel that I have to do the following regularly, while keeping up with my job:
1. Exercising
2. Dating
3. Cooking for myself (I’ve pretty much let this go though 😅)
Exercise at least offers mental & physical health benefits…Dating feels like gambling for a boyfriend?
It feels so terrible to see proven again and again that white supremacists are a major national security threat and see over and over that the country is unwilling to do anything about it. These folks are everywhere and we are in so so so much danger.
Our work is cited in here! What a surreal experience, to read excerpts of a paper you labored over, in such an important piece of journalism.
Please read & share. Also, the images with historical/civil rights era photos blending into contemporary photos is really striking.
😂
my interview tour starts this weekend. wish me luck!
and relatedly, what's the hire that's not a cluster hire and not a partner hire but they hire you and a collaborator/fellow POC? i keep referring to it as a "homie hire" but that can't be right 🤣
I’m giving talks at Harvard Psychology (April 26) and UVA Batten School (April 29). Then I’ll be back at Yale for the 50th Anniversary of the Afro-American Cultural Center where I’m receiving an award. Big week! Please say hi if you’re in or at any of these events!
Approx 30.33 years ago, we came to this country with no idea what was to come (esp me obvi lol).
It was such a treat to show my mom my new workplace. I am so grateful to her & my grandmother for being examples of women of influence & giving me a solid foundation to launch from.
THREAD
Yesterday, I served as an election judge, a poll worker in my local precinct. I arrived at 5am to help set up the polling place, and left at 8 30pm after we'd tabulated the votes and packed up the polling place. 1/
Yo, in the mortgage documents they kept being like "Ivuoma Onyeador, UNMARRIED WOMAN," and I was like "AND???" "SO???" I asked the lawyer if all that was really necessary and he was like, this is better than like 10 years ago when it would have said SPINSTER. 😭 Ok then 🤷🏾♀️
Today a friend texted me, "Any relation to Nony Onyeador?" And im like, ha, that's my sister. And he was like OMG her diversity in Hollywood report is amazing!! Basking in reflected glory. So proud of my sister. Also love having a pretty unique last name lol.
I like, had to start working out again. I need to also add like a 20 min walk in the morning & evening to mark the beginning & end of my day and to approximate some of the walking I did in the before times. It's wild to see how sedentary one can become, even if you don't want to.
Catch
@IjeomaOluo
on The Stacks discussing her new book MEDIOCRE: THE DANGEROUS LEGACY OF WHITE MALE AMERICA, and her process in writing it. We also talk snacks (of course).
@SealPress
@HachetteUS
By the end of my time there, I requested stipends and the like for my diversity work at UCLA. I had established a reputation for good work and expertise. And it made it easier to say no to "opportunities." Get paid folks. No one is owed your participation.
Today I got to work from my actual work office and it made me so happy! But long day, I had meetings from 8am-9pm. This yellow is the only thing that kept me going.
When I first went to therapy for the race related nonsense going down in grad school my white intern therapist was SHOOK. I'm like, how are you more thrown off by all this than me? She later transferred me to a BW who was unfazed by everything & I could actually make progress.
My PhD advisor Jenessa Shapiro passed away Thursday night. She was amazing: brilliant, kind and supportive, & a fighter at heart-for her values, her students, & her life. I admire her so much & am grateful that I got the honor to work w/ her. Keep her loved ones in your thoughts.
Data from University of Houston suggests that women lead search committees attract more female applicants and committees led by people of color attract way more candidates of color.
After literal YEARS of working on this project, I submitted my first manuscript to JPSP. I have no idea how it'll shake out, but I felt surprisingly emotional pressing submit. Shoutout to each of my coauthors, this was truly a team effort!
I’m grateful to have been able to return to New Haven to celebrate
#YaleAfam50
. It’s such an honor to contribute to the legacy that young Black American men (Yale was all male until 1969) in the late 60s envisioned, dreamt, and built. To 50 more years of Black excellence at Yale!
After years of having a draft academic website on Google Sites that I didn't like & months of having a draft academic website on Squarespace that I didn't like, I finally found a template that I don't hate and launched my academic website!!
Check it out:
Great read. I appreciated the part at the end where she reminded us that now we can see the light at the end of the tunnel. Biden Admin, vaccine, better treatment. "Normal" is still a long way off but a way forward is visible, which is heartening.
Wyoming may become the next state to outlaw capital punishment due to budgetary constraints and other concerns. Gov. Gordon described the death penalty as “a luxury that we cannot afford.”
Second talk as a faculty member today @ Princeton Psych. Seems to have gone well. Lovely to see so many familiar faces. Next up, UC Davis Psych on Monday, and then I'm done for the term!!
We've reached the stage on the dating apps where I'm giving feedback. 😅
Relatedly, if you know suitable men in Chicago, please connect us. If you've been following a bit, you know my personality. Maybe you have a friend who would be great for me. Help me out!
#ItTakesAVillage
So proud of my bestie, role model, and elder (by 10 days lol)
@Sakiera_Hudson
!
She works so hard and is such a generous light. She lifts as she climbs and is the epitome of a leader. I’m grateful she’s in academia and I’m particularly grateful for her voice and transparency.
Congrats to Asst. Prof. Sa-kiera Hudson, who received a 2024 National Science Foundation CAREER award, their most prestigious awards program in support of early-career faculty who have the potential to serve as role models in research and education.
If it's your strength, I hope you are giving close feedback & edits to the job market materials of underrepresented scholars on the job market. I hope you know they're on the market & are using your network to advocate for them. We need all hands on deck to improve representation
Mtg w/my coauthor (

) re: a study we're launching & we're wondering about an age old question: Does it matter whether scale items are 5 or 7 or 9 points? Does it matter whether each number is labeled or just the end points or the middle? Relevant papers would be great!
I think I saw Tressie tweeting about Epsom salt baths a bit ago and my whole body has been hurting so I took one after my first run in months (!) and truly felt a lot of relief??? Am I gonna need to do this every day??
Thiiiiiis! I remember being in a grad school and hearing a researcher say that we focus on implicit bias as a framing because it makes (white) people less defensive. So so many issues with that approach.
Whoa, who are these people? They do not feel how we did in 2016. They're not afraid for their lives and families. They're not going to get banned at the airport, killed by police or white supremacists, deported. What the hell are people on right now?
Now is the time for every Biden supporter to reach out to one person who voted for Trump.
Empathize with them.
Tell them you know how they feel (you do, from 2016).
Come up with one issue you can agree on.
Academics, do y’all have LLCs? I hear people direct their honoraria and consulting payments through those? Is there an explainer on this? How much do you need to be making for this to make sense? How do you come up with the name?
I think I submitted the last of my job apps!! There were a couple at the end where the link I had didn't work anymore or I took a closer look at the call & it didn't seem like a fit so I dropped those with the quickness 😂I'll keep an eye out for more but I'm feeling relieved!
Check out this piece by
@jaricheson
, featuring some of our work together. Also, it includes the words "in collaboration with the Northwestern professor Ivuoma Onyeador" which is still amazing to me, even as I'm two months into this job. Happy Monday all!!
The mythology of racial progress exerts a powerful hold on our minds,
@jaricheson
has found in her research. That hold is hard to break, she writes—and it undermines actual progress.
I’m also a UCLA Psych alum (& from the Social area). I support & am proud of the students. That letter clearly articulated the issues at stake.
UCLA Psych has one of the most diverse Psych PhD programs. Students get to weigh in on hiring. Doxxing them for that is unacceptable.
As a
@UCLA
Psych alum, I fully support the grad students who spoke up for their beliefs.
I’m also deeply concerned that their names were publicly leaked for what I assume was an internal letter to a hiring committee.
These students must be protected against retaliation.
THIS! "Biden believes that foreign graduates of a U.S. doctoral programme should be given a green card with their degree and that 'losing these highly trained workers to foreign economies is a disservice to our own economic competitiveness'"
I searched long and hard for signs of poverty. *House* on nice sized lot, 2 trucks. RACISM RADICALIZES PEOPLE. Stop the contortions to justify terrorism, please. At the least the replies were gathering him.
This is the home of Joseph Morrison, one of the Michigan men recently arrested for his plot to kidnap Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
Can we acknowledge that maybe economic circumstances play a role in radicalizing people?
I had a big faculty day today! That paper is available online, I made progress on another one, had therapy, spoke with media folks about a paper in press, consulted with stats folks about another project, met with
@Sakiera_Hudson
about a different one! But my brain is fried lol.
This was both hilarious & utterly wild. I remember learning about all these private schools I'd never heard of. Learning that my peers prepped for the SAT for years and had written senior theses in high school. Meanwhile, my AP classes has us write 5 paragraph essays...
"Less than 2 percent of the nation’s students attend so-called independent schools. But 24 percent of Yale’s class of 2024 attended an independent school"
Before you get mad, remember the numbers are confounded.
Those students are mostly legacy admits :/
Yup. Hiring me doubled the number of tenure line Black faculty at Kellogg. I'm also the only woman starting this year, of like 8 or 9 hires. Each URM hire really matters and this fraud is so damaging.
The thing about
#JessicaKrug
? Black and Latinx people make up such a small percentage of academia that knocking her off "the list" actually makes a noticeable dent in numbers within universities, subfields, etc. We're at the point where one person moves the needle.
