The credits were certified under Isometric’s industry-first Ocean Alkalinity Enhancement from Coastal Outfalls Protocol, and the data and calculations behind each credit are fully transparent and publicly available on the Isometric Registry.

OAE is a promising carbon removal pathway with the potential to remove billions of tonnes of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. It can be deployed using existing infrastructure and can help mitigate ocean acidification, benefiting marine ecosystems.

These credits demonstrate that ocean-based solutions like OAE can be accurately and robustly quantified—and set the standard for future credits.

Carbon removal supplier @Arcaclimate provided key input during development and plans to use the protocol for projects across Australia and Canada. Expert reviewers from @wsp, @RockyMtnInst, @HeriotWattUni and @cardiffuni also contributed to the development of this protocol.

The OSEM Protocol allows for a variety of feedstocks to be used, including industrial by-products such as mine tailings and waste rock, and is designed for use in both operational and closed mining sites, as well as other industrial settings.

OSEM accelerates this process by increasing the rate of reaction between carbon dioxide and feedstocks. This is done by physically manipulating the materials to increase surface area, or by pre-treating them using thermal, chemical or physical methods to increase reactivity.

OSEM builds on the natural mineralization process, where alkaline rocks or minerals—known as feedstocks—react with atmospheric carbon dioxide to form stable carbonate minerals, storing the carbon for thousands of years.

Certification of the Open System Ex-Situ Mineralization (OSEM) Protocol follows a comprehensive public consultation that included input from buyers, suppliers, and leading academics.

With nearly 110,000 wastewater plants, WAE could remove hundreds of millions of tonnes of carbon dioxide annually.
