Petro also accused the U.S. of trying to impose its will on its neighbours, comparing its actions to imperialism. “The United States cannot be considered an empire, but one of the nations among others”.

He also defended his efforts to fight the drug trade, telling me that his govt had seized more cocaine than any other in history. Asked why Trump hadn’t acknowledged this; “Because of pride. Because he thinks I’m a subversive thug, a terrorist..because I was a member of the M-19”

Responding to reports in Colombia media of alleged links between Colombian officials and dissidents of the FARC, Pres Petro denied the allegations but acknowledged that ties between officials & drug traffickers have existed for years, even before he took office.

I asked Pres Petro whether he thought Maduro was a narco trafficker, a drug lord, a dictator.  “The problem of Maduro is called democracy …the lack of democracy,”adding that “no Colombian investigation … has shown us a relationship between Colombian drug trafficking and Maduro”

“They’re [USA] going to get oil for next to nothing, because that's what the anecdotal evidence suggests. Trump isn't negotiating with Maduro on drug issues because he's not stupid. He's not thinking about the democratisation of Venezuela, let alone drug trafficking.”
