there is a feedback loop-- I notice that when i start implicitly optimizing for being-liked that this results in feeling like being-liked is The Most Important Thing, and that starts up the anxiety since being-liked cannot be done reliably. 4/.

In practice a lot of this involved giving myself permission to be awkward or potentially unlikeable. Like: I notice the temptation to avoid revealing things about myself that would result in people liking me less. It helps to resist this temptation. 3/.

This was tricky to put into practice because trying to become liked is a habit. it required constant vigilance to notice when I was feeling anxious, notice the cause-- typically, that I was trying to avoid being disliked by someone--and then explicitly stop trying to do that. 2/.

I relate to this! . I had pretty bad social anxiety for a long time. An event from some months ago made me realize that this anxiety stems from attempting to control what others think of me; any situation where I am explicitly not attempting to gain approval, I'm fine. 1/.

the most grating, useless (directionally correct) piece of advice i ever got was "get out of your head". throughout my 20s it was the most common feedback i got & always made my blood boil. how i got out of my head, and why "get out of your head" is a worthless string of words 🧵.
