Leary was stationed in the rifle factory. The local militia & U.S. Marines defeated John Brown & his men, & Leary was shot while trying to escape and lived for some time before dying of his wounds. Several years later, his wife married again to abolitionist Charles Henry Langston

A year later, Leary was introduced to John Brown, a radical abolitionist. Leary and John A. Copeland Jr., his relative by marriage, both joined John Brown’s party in the attack on Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in October of 1859. The attack was to take control of the U.S. arsenal.

In Oberlin, Leary joined the abolitionist cause. In 1858, John Price was arrested under the Fugitive Slave Act of 1850. Leary & others stormed a building to release him & send him to Canada along the Underground Railroad. 2 received light sentences, but Leary was not arrested.

In honor of #Blackhistorymonth, we spotlight an Irish American abolitionist, Lewis Sheridan Leary. Leary, grandson of Irish immigrant Jeremiah O’Leary & his mixed race wife, was one of five black men involved in John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, where he was fatally injured.
