We were very sad to hear the news of the death of Malachy McCourt. What a friend to all of Irish America he was. We will not see his like again. Check out Elizabeth's interview with him last year.

A year later, Leary was introduced to John Brown, a radical abolitionist. Leary and John A. Copeland Jr., his relative by marriage, both joined John Brown’s party in the attack on Harpers Ferry, Virginia, in October of 1859. The attack was to take control of the U.S. arsenal.

In honor of #Blackhistorymonth, we spotlight an Irish American abolitionist, Lewis Sheridan Leary. Leary, grandson of Irish immigrant Jeremiah O’Leary & his mixed race wife, was one of five black men involved in John Brown’s raid on Harpers Ferry, where he was fatally injured.
