Interoperability doesn't work if there's a built-in token. If you create a great protocol that makes you super rich, I have a strong incentive to fork it and create a competing protocol that makes me super rich, undermining interoperability. Only pure/thin protocols like IP work

Great post on "slim protocols". Building a token into a protocol creates an incentive to fork it.
This is why Interledger isn't tied to any currency or blockchain. Interoperability protocols tied to any one system will end up with many forks and no interoperability.
