Justice Meaza Ashenafi, former Chief Justice of Ethiopia, is moderating a panel at the ongoing seminar “Addressing Africa’s Democratic Backslide: What Role for the African Union and Regional Economic Communities?”. Organized by @Int_IDEA’s Africa and West Asia Regional Office.

Dr. Winluck Wahiu of @Int_IDEA presented the key findings from the GSoD Report 2025 @ the ongoing seminar organized by @Int_IDEA AWA Regional Office. He noted that “overall, the report shows a decline in Africa’s democratic performance, with West Africa being the hardest hit.”

Dr. Mercy Fekadu, Director of IPSS, unpacked the drivers of democracy’s regression in Africa at the @Int_IDEA seminar happening in Addis Ababa, highlighting that citizens’ trust in institutions and elite influence are key factors behind the continent’s democratic backslide.

Dr. Andrews Asamoah, of @Int_IDEA, stressed the AU & RECs’ role in coup prevention, noting that since the 1990s, Africa has condemned coups, adopted the Lome Declaration, and established PSC & ACDEG charters to strengthen democratic resilience.
