It's here! Say hello to The Impulse 30" Cooktop (also known as highest performing stove yet). Its state-of-the-art technology delivers premium performance, all while paving the way for a clean energy future. And the best news? You can reserve yours today:
made pancakes at Impulse HQ today 👌🏼
thanks to the Cooktop's temp sensors, no test batch needed, no smoking butter, no fiddling with the heat to keep it "just right". and just like that, a perfect stack 🥞
We’re Impulse ⚡️. We’re on a mission to accelerate home electrification through next-gen electric home appliances. We’ve just raised $20M in series A funding to bring this to life - first-up: an induction stove like never before. Learn more:

we make stoves, and we're cooks too!
this is just the tip of the iceburg on what the Impulse Cooktop can do and why it really is the highest performing stove out there.
A thing we do a lot at the
@ImpulseLabs_
office is ... cook steak.
But we can do it, thanks to our temperature sensors, in a totally novel way: via exact temperature reverse-sear.
~131F / 55C for ~1 hour (and 2 flips), then a quick sear.
No water bath, no plastic, 1 take.

Can you design the world's most powerful stove and secretly add 1.4 terawatt hours of battery power to the grid?
Founder

thinks so.
Episode 27 of S³ featuring

Battery-powered appliances:
1. Can replace gas appliances without expensive rewiring
2. Store energy from the grid and smooth out the solar power curve
3. Are extremely high-powered, due to fast-discharging batteries
That's an impressive combination.
“The natural gas industry doesn’t like when people electrify any of their appliances, but their biggest issue is when customers fully electrify their home.”

We break it down in this week's blog post:
Pulling the Plug on Gas’s Lifeline 👇
1/ we're firm believers that induction is the better option when it comes to cooking and the environment, but we also know there is a lot of misinformation out there - time to debunk some of those myths ...
Don't forget, we're at
#CES2024
this week - come say hi. Get a first peak at the Impulse Cooktop IRL (located in the Amazon Experience Area, Venetian Ballroom G-H).
New research on gas stoves and childhood asthma
--> 12% of current US childhood asthma attributed to gas stove use
--> comparable to children’s risk of being exposed to secondhand smoke
--> IL = 21.1%; CA = 20.1%; NY = 18.8%; MA = 15.4%; PA = 13.5%
A fun trick of “set stove to 330F” is you don’t have to be a particularly good cook to get stuff to release from a stainless steel pan — it won’t burn but will rather dehydrate and then de-stick.
And browned bottom + runny yolk is easy to get.
There wont be a gas stove ban, and yet we now have to deal w another chapter of the culture war getting people so titled they cant think for themselves
I sat down w
@sdamico
of
@ImpulseLabs_
and the fact remains that its just a fucking great product
“It’s getting to a point where the environmental options are the better options, versus there’s some compromise, like my straw dissolves in my drink etc” ... “paper straws are the counterpoint of what we’re doing. The product is good, and it’s good for the environment.”
@sdamico
We just posted a very exciting hardware product management role -- and tipping my hand here, this isn't just about stoves. We're building infrastructure that enables across the board reduction in grid and residential peak loads, while enabling vastly more renewable deployment.
with the Impulse Cooktop, maintaining a low, even simmer for a giant pot of stock is as simple as, "set temp and leave it" ... no fiddling with a flame or adjusting the heat. bts from a visit this week with a special guest who showed us how it's done 🧑🍳.
(ps - yes, large stock…
Due to the use of off-the-shelf components that pass compliance from a handful of upstream vendors, many appliance brands can’t do stuff like this.
But if you approach this as “make the best device from first principles” (and have an awesome team) — you can.
@sdamico
@PaulOWennberg
@ImpulseLabs_
So $5500 for 3 kWh or $1833/kWh. That's only ~80% more than the cost per kWh of an installed Tesla Powerwall a (~$13-15k installed for 13 kWh) and the Powerwall won't boil water for the kids pasta in 6 seconds! Not bad.
We've got some SUPER exciting news: Impulse will be at CES 2024 in Las Vegas (Jan 9th - 12th). Come by and say hi - we'll be at the Amazon Experience Area located at The Venetian Ballroom G-H. See you there!

Putting a battery on an induction stove could solve electrification's last-mile problem.
Lots of great details in my conversation with
@sdamico
of
@ImpulseLabs_
(Shoutout to
@Noahpinion
for bringing the company to my attention)
the 3 kWh battery in the Impulse Cooktop means higher performance (10 kW burner peak power), easier installation (works on 120V or 240V connections), back-up power during outages (approx. 3 meals), AND less strain on the grid during peak hours for cleaner energy use
World-renowned chef Alice Waters told Yahoo News that she will switch to using electric stoves in her trailblazing Berkeley, Calif., restaurant Chez Panisse.

🚙The annual methane emissions of these stoves = emissions of half a million cars
But superior gas performance has stymied electric adoption.. until now

Batteries are a big deal when it comes to energy storage, electrification, and the Impulse Cooktop. Read on to learn why we believe LFP batteries are the perfect foundation for your stove and home energy system:
We’re back! This time we sit down with Sam D’Amico, CEO and co-founder of Impulse Labs, an induction stove start-up based out of San Francisco. Listen for nearly 2 hours of physics, macro, cooking, and much more:
Home electrification can be a journey full of roadblocks and challenges. Despite numerous tailwinds - getting to all-electric everything is often complex, slow, and expensive.

2/ Myth: Induction cooktops use radiation.
Truth: Induction cooktops use electromagnetic fields, not radiation. They're safe and pose minimal health risks.
3/ Myth: Most cookware doesn't work with induction.
Truth: A lot of cookware is compatible with induction as long as it's magnetic. Cast-iron and stainless steel are both great (and you can get a converter disk for any non-magnetic pans).
@zachalberico
thanks to the built-in 3 kWh battery, our 30" Cooktop works on a 120V outlet (just plug it in) or wired 240V connection (like a standard induction stove). the Cooktop drops in to your counter - if you have more questions on install feel free to email us at info
