There, my wonderful co-authors @Chris_W_Blair @m_ballesteross @austinlwright and I used five recent books that make control over territory a focus of the analysis to provide a discussion of what we know/ want to learn about territorial control, its measurement, and determinants.

Very interesting paper. It highlights one of the thoughts that has been brewing in my mind for a while: there are multiple paths away from the 'scarce state.' Those paths do not necessarily involve challenging local elites but instead reintegrating and 'managing' them.
