As a reporter I worry about a lot, like getting my facts wrong or misquoting someone. But I also live in perpetual fear of ending a phone call with a source by accidentally saying "I love you."
I’ve been sleeping on my sister’s floor and wearing the same clothes since Thursday. Many people have it much worse, sleeping in shelters, unsure if their homes are still standing. I’m grateful to be in my own bed tonight, and hope everyone gets to return to theirs soon.

Rebecca Grossman has been charged with two counts of murder in the deaths of Jacob and Mark Iskander of Westlake Village. Almost 3 months to the day after the two boys were hit in an intersection while crossing with their family.
Cronies is being sued by LA County, which alleges that the business has been a public nuisance for ignoring public health orders and continuing to serve patrons after outdoor operations were ordered to halt last November.
“However long the night, the dawn will break. We are a hurting city but we are a community of love and compassion. Dawn will break and we will be stronger and more loving.” Andy Fox’s closing statement of the vigil. “We are Thousand Oaks Strong.”
I consider Dawn a friend and I’m still a little scared of her, which is why I know she’s going to be a killer watchdog reporter. Ventura county is on notice.
Breaking news: Today is my first day as an investigative and watchdog reporter at
@vcstar
. I’ll be focused on holding public officials and civic leaders accountable, exposing injustices and abuse of power, and shedding light on challenges faced by Ventura County residents.
Agoura Hills resident Kaya Ramos has been brightening his neighbors’ quarantine by playing guitar in his front yard most afternoons. You can grab a seat at Reyes Adobe Park and enjoy the show. He’s typically on around 430 or so
If you've followed me for any length of time you know I don't discuss my personal life on Twitter but it's time for some personal news: Starting next month I'll be joining the team at
@nashvillebiz
as a residential real estate reporter.
Does anyone else feel a slight discomfort about movie characters not practicing social distancing? I’m watching the Goonies and at least three of these kids are gonna test positive.
Rebecca Grossman had a court date today that ended with another setting/resetting date on Sept. 14. There is a crowd of people at the Van Nuys court house protesting the delays, calling for justice for Mark and Jacob Iskander
Someone at a press conference just found out I’m from the
@acornnewspaper
and their immediate response was that we don’t run the “Squirrel of the Month” feature regularly enough. This is my public pledge to fix that.
Cronies co-owner Dave Rea speaking to patrons and protesters gathered at the Kanan road location, which had been defying orders to close its patio since last week.
Fun fact--vice presidential candidate Kamala Harris' husband
@DouglasEmhoff
is a graduate of
@AgouraHS
.
@acornnewspaper
has very little pull in national politics but we're trying to get in touch with him so we can learn more. Someone help me out!!
I’ve tweeted about a yarn bomber living amongst us before—as far as “graffiti” goes, this is pretty great (and relatively easy cleanup) Spotted at the corner of Triunfo and Lindero at the athletic club
Some kind words from the Iskander family near the crosswalk where Mark and Jacob died. The memorial is news to me but I’ll look into it. Keep an eye on
@acornnewspaper
There is a growing vigil at the crosswalk on Triunfo Canyon Road and Saddle Mountain Drive, where two young boys were hit and killed by a car last night.
Brookside elementary school is one of the three

elementary schools that welcomed back kindergarteners this morning. It was the students’ first time ever stepping foot in a classroom
1/ There’s a new cougar in the mountains.😻 A young female mountain lion was captured on 2/12 by NPS biologists in the Simi Hills & has become the 96th cat to be included in our 18-yr study.
Mandatory evacuations are still in effect but CHP Lieutenant Kevin Kurker says officers are working to reopen the 101 freeway, which he expects will happen sometime tonight
A young man I’ve never met just complimented my work with the

I came to the

office to work and look who else decided to show up!

(whose posture has not improved at all) and
@Michael_Coons
. It almost feels like a normal day.
Instead of letting an insulting email ruin my day I'm posting this photo of me in second (?) grade. I'm calling on all my colleagues to post a childhood/yearbook photo of themselves to brighten up this very, very trying week. LET'S SEE 'EM FOLKS!

Update from
@CityAgouraHills
city councilmember
@deborahklopez
regarding Cronies. By continuing to disregard the county health order, they’ve now lost their permit to operate at all, including for take-out or delivery, and may well lose their business/liquor licenses to boot
Happy to report the Oak Park Community Center is still standing. I stood across the street Thursday night watching fire race down the hills behind it and was certain it would go up. It got close though, scorched earth in front and behind it.

Scott Erickson was charged Wednesday with misdemeanor reckless driving. He was identified in an
@acornnewspaper
story last week as the second driver involved the night Rebecca Grossman allegedly struck and killed Mark and Jacob Iskander.
Thinking about that time a complete stranger emailed me to say they loved my reporting on Rebecca Grossman and then asked for free access to
@acornnewspaper
so they could follow the updates. Pay for the news if you like it so much.
Many residents may be looking at the areas under evacuation and thinking it’s safe to return home, but authorities warn that strong winds tomorrow might reignite the flames, and residents would have to be evacuated all over again.
Marcus Williams, 17, of Oak Park leading the crowd in a chant.
“I didn’t plan to climb up there, I was going to hang out in the back, I was very specific with my mother I wouldn’t make any big dumb gestures,” Williams said. “And then I climbed up on the sign...”
Life update: I quit my job in Nashville and moved to the Bay Area. Getting started writing freelance news/anything else I can get paid for. Feels good to be back in CA but this is going to be a long journey. Asking for any and all advice, connections, tips, etc. to help get going
A counter protester showed up but was escorted away before anything happened. He’s rejoined the crowd and is talking to protesters, trying to engage in debate. I’ve heard the term “sheeple.”
Maybe the most important thing I've learned is that local news is one of the best things you can spend your money on. Without papers like the Acorn there's lower election turnout, development projects get less attention, governing bodies get less scrutiny and
Deputies have closed TO Boulevard so protesters can kneel in the road. You can’t see it that well here but three women are leading a speech in the center
Westlake Village and Agoura Hills residents will be able to sleep in their own beds tonight.
@LASDHQ
just announced the evacuation orders will be lifted at 9 pm. The 101 freeway will also be reopened.
Anyway. I've met a lot of amazing people during my time here but I'm excited to start this next phase of my career and experience life in a different part of the country. Keep following me if you want to learn about residential real estate in Nashville.

Welcome to the fam, P-95! The male mountain lion was captured in the

1/16. He weighed 90lbs & is about 1 1/2 yrs old. "Chirping" was heard nearby & another cat was later spotted by scientists. P-95 is likely still traveling w/ a sibling or his mom.
It’s the Woolsey fire.
Wool.
Like sheep.
Woolsey.
Not “Woos-lee.”
Not ”Wools-lee.”
Woolsey.
It’s been over a year. My inner copy editor can no longer handle hearing it mispronounced.
Woolsey.
Thank you.
"Similar to musicians or actors who just haven’t made it yet, I think reporters (at least those early in their careers, like myself) tell ourselves stories as much as we do our readers. Yeah, the pay is crap and the hours are too long but who cares?"
It’s worth noting that local BLM protests featured no destruction or violence, with the exception of one BLM supporter getting maced by someone who disagreed
Apparently part of keeping your pipes from freezing involves “dripping” them overnight (more of a stream than a drip 🤷♂️). I’m not in California anymore but I’m used to drought conditions so this feels deeply uncomfortable to me.
I’m glad to have the option of using the trails again. And to know
@ReporterDawn
will exact slow and painful revenge on whoever screws this up and forces them closed again
I grabbed some basic groceries at Trader Joe’s earlier. They still have items but it’s slim pickings. Please remember to be kind to each other through this whole thing—we’re in it together. I really don’t want to report on fights over cottage cheese.
It takes something special to document loss. I’ll tease
@ReporterDawn
to no end, but I couldn’t do what she’s done to capture the pieces left in the aftermath of Borderline.
They say all journalism is local. After a year of Borderline reporting, I’ve learned all pain is local, too. It has a face and a name. It has been an honor to put a face to the stories of the victims, survivors & families who responded to unthinkable horror with indomitable hope.
A reporter from
@PeppGraphic
is doing a feature on
@ReporterDawn
. She’s definitely performing for the camera—I’ve worked next to her for two years and this is the quietest I’ve ever seen her.
Driving through Oak Park for the first time since Thursday night and I’m glad it’s still there. When I left, it looked like it would be mostly ash come sunrise. You can’t save everything but the firefighters did an amazing job controlling the burn
LA county Sheriff Chief John Benedict said over 200 deputy personnel are in the area securing properties against looters.
There were two incidents of looting yesterday that resulted in two arrests.
Emergency services are emphasizing that if you’re told to evacuate, leave the area. Stubborn residents can be a complication for firefighters.
Cities still under evacuation are:
-Westlake Village
-Calabasas
-Hidden Hills
-Agoura Hills
- Malibu
Deputies are wearing standard gear. This guys’s wearing a heavier vest but he’s the only one. They’ve taken the position of stepping back and letting protesters do their thing, so long as it’s respectful. I just spotted him holding someone’s baby, posing for a photo.

I woke up thinking it was going to be a good day, but wasn’t sure what that would look like. Then I got to ride in a fire truck. I love this job.

I just spoke to a Simi Valley resident living at home with his mother and stepfather, both of whom have tested positive for coronavirus. He’s confident he’s got it as well.
“I think it’s going to be a long time before things return to normal.”
The Acorn has learned refrigerator trucks arrived on site at Los Robles Hospital to store the dead due to morgue overflow. One veteran nurse at the T.O. hospital says just had "worst day in my ER history."

Netflix is experimenting with allowing users to watch programs at 1.5X normal speed. This is a horrible idea--if you're watching so much TV you need to speed it up, stop it. HOWEVER. I do think this function should be applied to videos of municipal meetings.
Got the whole

family in one room. It’s staff meeting day, but the big news is someone brought donuts. Hot tip—if you want reporters to turn out, offer us food.
In light of all that's going on, it's important to find the little things to be grateful for. Like the fact that it's not raining anymore. Things feel less dire when it's sunny.
Deputies with LASD are patrolling PCH and citing parked vehicles—the beaches are closed! Stay home. You could get a $1000 fine for being out there. Or jail time.
.
@KyleBJorrey
once told me you haven't made it until you've pissed off an elected official and damn if he wasn't right. Each of the Acorn's reporters has at least one story about a city council member or a school board official attacking our name in public...
The discourse around our stories isn't always great. As
@ReporterDawn
says, your first lesson is never read the comments, but without
@acornnewspaper
those conversations wouldn't be happening in the first place so I take it as a win.
I filed a CPRA request for Grossman's mugshot on Oct. 30.
@LASDHQ
had 24 days to acknowledge it and today (34 days later) they finally did. This is just them saying 'we're processing your request.' For those unfamiliar with the CPRAs, this is how it goes.
When the Black Lives Matter sign outside his parents' house was damaged multiple times, Max Meyers set up a surveillance camera. To Meyers' surprise, police arrested two Ventura County employees for vandalizing the sign.
