Watched new Red Sox LHP Jovani Moran on Saturday. FB 92-94, CH 82-84, SL 85-87, CB 80. Vertical slot is tough to pick up. FB missed bats. CH usually best secondary, but was leaving it up & gave up 3 hits. Threw often & clearly has solid feel for it. In 26 IP this year: 43 K:8 BB.

Another strong outing for Worcester RHP Alex Hoppe in relief. FB 98-99, CT 91-93 & SL 87-88. 20p/14s. Showed ability to land secondaries. Today was 7th straight scoreless outing. In that stretch: 8 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 9 K. Pitching his way into the Rule 5 discussion this winter.

Impressive 1-2-3 5th for Tolle culminating with his hardest pitch of the night, a 97.7 mph FB, resulting in a weak groundout. He only threw 8 pitches & was landing his CT/SL/CB in the zone. Also threw one of his better changeups of the game for a whiff.

Tolle worked around a pair of singles for a scoreless 4th. One came on a changeup that he left up, but the other was a well executed curveball that Gimenez blooped to right field. He got 3 more whiffs, one each on FB, CT & SL.

9 pitch third for Tolle. He seems to have settled in after that rough first. Interestingly, he snapped off a nice 81 mph curveball to end the inning, which isn’t a pitch I’ve seen from him before.

Much better 2nd for Red Sox LHP Payton Tolle, retiring the side in order, on 7 pitches. 3 more whiffs, including 2 more against Gimenez. FB 94-96 really plays up & slider looks improved compared to last time I saw him in Greenville.

Rough first for Payton Tolle giving up a pair of HR. Should have been out of the inning, but error on routine double play ball extended things & it spiraled. Locked back in at the end & struck out the last 2 hitters. 7 whiffs total in 1st, including 2 vs. rehabbing Andres Gimenez

Steven Matz and Jordan Hicks deserve a lot of credit for keeping this a one run game and giving the Red Sox a chance against Robert Suarez who is somehow the Padres 5th best reliever.

Red Sox RHP Alex Hoppe closed things out for Worcester tonight & sat 99-100 w/a cutter 92-93 & SL 88-89. Rule 5 eligible this winter. Has always had premium velo, but struggled to consistently throw strikes. Tonight was his 6th straight scoreless outing: 7 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 8 K

Worcester OF Jhostynxon Garcia was having a quiet night until his 5th AB when he drove an 88 mph CH out to LF for a HR. Fell behind 1-2, but battled back to 3-2. There, he got a mistake pitch up in the zone & lined it just inside the foul pole with an exit velocity of 106.9 mph.

Solid outing for Red Sox LHP Connelly Early tonight: 5 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 7 K. 79p/52s. 9 whiffs. CH best pitch. Limited hard contact other than HR on hanging CH. Velo ticked down as game went on, but secondaries got more effective. FB 92-96.CT 87-90.CH 81-85.SL 83-86.CB 79-82
