Cannabis is well known to cause psychotic breaks. When Colorado legalized pot, they had a 500% increase in cannabis induced psychosis. The premise of my book is that it also opens you to spiritual attack. It appears the shooter may have been both crazy and demon possessed.

So, the early church was not some sort of a mushroom cult. They did not mix drugs with their religious practices. Far from it. They condemned such practices in stark and clear terms.

And as the centuries unfolded, this attitude in the Church never softened. We see a clear and consistent succession of bishops and church leaders making it clear that pharmakeia had no place in Christianity.

Finally, in the Shepherd of Hermas (130AD), Vision 3, the author says, “Be not like the sorcerers (pharmakois).” . So here we have three of the earliest Christian writings outside the New Testament (Ignatius, Didache, and Hermas) all unreservedly condemning pharmakeia.

In the Didache (90AD), the author says Christians must not practice magic and do not practice pharmakeia (2.2). Later, he lists pharmakeia as a “way of death” (5.1). This very early author makes it clear that pharmakeia and Christianity are completely incompatible.
