Since the late 19th century, one of the primary ways in which the Negro spiritual has been preserved is through concert arrangements by African American composers and arrangers, as heard in our episode of AAAMC Speaks featuring Evelyn Simpson Curenton.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, the Negro Spiritual served as a way enslaved Black folk expressed sorrows, resistance and hopes for true liberation on both earthly and spiritual terms.
