It's the Friday before Security Summer Camp and I want to give some @defcon advice you may not have heard or believe, but I assure you it is true: ๐งต 1. You don't have to drink to be welcomed by people. If you don't feel welcome move on. There are plenty of folks to meet.

That's a tough one. Probably general hardening of NT 4.0 or setting up email encryption in Lotus Notes/Domino
What was the very first cybersecurity task you remember doing? For me it was turning off services in /etc/inetd.conf to harden a default Linux install.

FYI: When we would ask George: "Is it Chew-bah-ka or Chew-back-a?" / "Is it Lay-a or Lee-a?" / "Is it Hahn or Han (as in hand)?"- he would just shrug & didn't really care. He told us it would be pronounced in various ways in different parts of the galaxy. ๐คจ #TrueStory

If youโre still in schooling for or thinking about more school for cybersecurity, take those legal, contract, psych, and writing classes. They will do far more service to you and be extreme resume builders over learning granularly about how encryption algorithms work.

I frequently tell people I'm there to enable them to succeed. I may advise taking the well traveled path with a handrail to ascend a mountain but if that's not fast enough I'll work with you to set up safety lines and carabiners for you to scale the cliff face.
The brakes on a car are only there to enable us to go faster. The security team should should be looked at the same way. Security shouldn't slow you down, but instead it's there to enable you to do business in a chaotic environment. To let business move fast, safely.
