Eindrücke von gestern - #TeamCampania ist unter die Erde gestiegen, um das antike Neapel zu erkunden. Und es gab einiges zu sehen: der alte Marktplatz (macellum), das Aquädukt, das Theater …

Alongside logical argumentation (#logos) and emotional appeal (#pathos), recourse to #ethos can persuade a sceptical audience. If you're wondering now how to achieve #ethos and appear credible, Aristotle would suggest becoming wise, virtuous, and benevolent.#rhet101 #ISHRBootCamp

produced by their reputation and/or their rhetorical performance. If a speaker is an expert in their field, has a high position of authority, or appears to share the same values of their audience, they will be able to impress their listeners with their #ethos. [2/3]

When we tell you about the #basics of #rhetoric, we might argue: "You know us, so you know that our posts about #rhetoric are credible." That's basically what it means when someone talks about #ethos—“character". #Ethos refers to the credibility of the speaker, [1/3]

than in front of a group of eager students. All in all, pathos is a fierce, acute and temporary movement of the soul, which should be distinguished from #ethos as a milder, longer-term disposition of character. We will talk about this next week. (3/3) #rhet101 #ISHRBootCamp

that is emotionally engaging in itself (content-based #pathos) or by evoking emotions through our own performance (expressive #pathos). And, of course, #pathos is closely related to context. A passionate speech at our local coffee shop might be perceived differently (2/3)

#basics of #rhetoric: it is not only #logos that is important to persuade, but also #pathos, the emotional appeal to our audience. #Pathos is not irrational emotional excitement; it should be a purposeful process. We can create #pathos either by talking about a subject (1/3)

inductive or deductive reasoning.Because of the logical conclusions drawn by the speaker, #logos is valid for any rational listener. But see, that's the problem: often, #logos on its own isn't enough to persuade. So see you next week for #pathos! [3/3] #rhet101 #ISHRBootCamp

of the speaker). We begin with #logos, understood in its rhetorical sense. #Logos refers to the logical structure and rational appeal of an argument. Examples of #logos include appeals to facts and evidence, examples, citations of sources and statistics, and the use of [2/3]

Next on the list for the #basics of #rhetoric is the so-called “rhetorical triangle”. In his rhetorical manual, Aristotle identified three modes of persuasion:#logos (reason or argument), #pathos (emotional appeal) and #ethos (reference to the status and authority [1/3]

Although #decorum is a guiding concept of rhetoric, it can be quite fluid. Where do the value systems of speaker and #audience differ? Do speaker and audience have a shared value system at all? The answer is always a balancing act. (3/3) #rhet101 #ISHRBootCamp #teamrhetoric

What is appropriate for an audience in a social, cultural, ethical and aesthetic context? What are they accustomed to? These questions are worth considering if you want to be persuasive. A good speaker knows their #audience and tailors their speech to their expectations. (2/3)

The same picture can look very different in different frames. This is also true of speech. In rhetorical terms, we call the frame #decorum. Broadly speaking, #decorum describes the local preconditions of your rhetorical act. (1/3)
