Our research found that far-left online activity doesn’t promote violence as a core strategy, with far-right calls for violence against opponents and minorities seen in far greater numbers.

Over 2 years, researchers studied Facebook, Twitter and Gab to determine the most important narratives promoted by Australian political fringes, the dynamics that drive them, and their potential for escalation to violence.

Further findings include observable spikes in activity around world events. The BLM movement caused a 126% increase in far-right activity and a 7.5% for far left. Social media monitoring and moderation, therefore, must be dynamic and demand-focused.

Prior to this briefing, researchers examined reciprocal dynamics on Facebook, focusing on how narratives about the other side of the political spectrum shape the online activity of these groups.

The team also turned to Twitter, looking at patterns of far-right and far-left mobilisation and how they interacted with each other, the differences and commonalities in their online behaviours and key topics of mobilisation:

The third report analysed the far-right's take on the far-left on Gab, the alternative platform known for providing a safe haven for right-wing extremists banned from other social media platforms.
