Higher interest rates have so far had a mixed impact on bond issuance across the major asset classes. U.S. Treasuries and Mortgage-Backed Securities have bucked the trend with robust borrowing, fueled by a strong housing market and record Federal government stimulus spending.

Today’s market update ∙ The S&P 500 fell 0.76% and the yield on the U.S. 10-Year note dropped to 1.62% ∙ Secretary Yellen remarked that it was possible the U.S. would return to full employment in 2022 ∙ ICE BofA Move Index, which measures bond volatility, fell to 60.77

👀All eyes on the government bond market: On Thursday, March 25, the U.S. Treasury will auction $62 billion 7-year notes. Traders will be watching to see if the bid/cover ratio (an indicator of demand) will bounce back from historic lows set at last month’s sale.

Today’s market update ∙ The S&P 500 rose 0.70% as 10-year Treasury yields slid lower ∙ Treasury Secretary Yellen and Fed Chair Powell are expected to speak before a House committee tomorrow ∙ ICE BofA Move Index, which measures bond volatility, fell to 67.62

Foreign exchange options on the Turkish Lira are seeing extreme moves as investors react to the firing of Turkey’s central bank governor. Implied volatility has spiked higher for 1mo and 3mo options, with both hitting levels last seen during the country’s 2018 currency crisis.

After a period of relative bullishness, investors turned risk averse on Turkey’s sovereign credit after its central bank governor was replaced. 5-year Turkey CDS spreads are +167 bps wider in response as of mid-day and the lira has lost roughly -10% versus the USD.

The Federal Reserve has stepped up with unprecedented stimulus over the past year. SOMA holdings have grown by +85% to over $7 trillion, led mainly by increased purchases of US Treasury Notes/Bonds and Agency Mortgage-Backed Securities

Options traders had a wild ride over the past year. Most major asset classes followed a similar pattern, with volatility peaking in March/April 2020 during COVID-19 market disruption, and bottoming out most recently in the first quarter of 2021.
