Springfield and my family knows all to well the sacrifices of these men and women as my Uncle Ronald Hurst gave his life for our county in Vietnam. Today is a day to reflect on his memory and all others who didn’t make it home.

On Memorial Day, we come together to honor and remember the fallen heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. These brave men and women selflessly put themselves in harms way to protect the values and freedoms we hold dear.

Everyone deserves a seat at the table and the chance to serve. I humbly thank you for mine and will work to pass the baton to the next generation of leaders coming behind me.

I firmly believe that we are stronger by making our circle wider, working with more groups, businesses, and organizations dedicated to making our corner of the world a better place.

Through the years, I’ve committed myself to honesty, transparency in government, and good old fashioned people power. I may not be in the chambers of city hall anymore, but I won’t stop fighting for every man, woman, and child who have been excluded from local government.

It may not always be popular, but you can always trust me to speak up and speak out on behalf of this community. Because we’re worth it. We’re worth asking tough questions, holding folks accountable - we’re worth bold solutions to the pressing issues of our day.

As the great #MLK once said, “Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter,” a value I hold firmly in my heart.

For 10 years now, I’ve had the pleasure of serving the residents of our great city as an at-large city councilor representing all 8 wards and 19 neighborhoods in our City from taxpayers to business owners to the most marginalized regardless of gender, race, religion, or creed.

Join a club, committee, or neighborhood civic council. Coach, mentor, share, engage, empower, believe, build, ORGANIZE. Get involved and stay involved. We will never stop fighting to make our city the best it can be. Let’s continue to show up for each other.

So many of you have donated your time, talent, and treasure to this campaign. Know that we’re always stronger together, and that none of this would ever be possible without you.

“One city” is not just a campaign slogan for me. From the beginning, this campaign has been about the people. We worked together to not just meet the moment, but to build a movement for change - of, by, and for the people.

Indeed it takes courage to make change, and if I’ve learned anything, it takes a community to do it.
