As it turned out, this was a vital heat for the Vikings, for had they pulled off another 5-1, they might easily have gone on to win the match. For the Vikings, only McMillan and Owen offered any real threat to Newport, and teenager Owen showed that not only has he tremendous.

Bob Coles’s challenge. This they would have done had Owen not forced his way past Amundson on the fourth bend, with just over a lap to go, for in doing so he pushed his team mate out and left a gap for Cole’s to come through and split the Vikings’ pair.

and Phil Herne, being excluded for tape breaking. Then, in what turned out to be a farcical opening to the match, it took 12min and four attempts to start the first heat, and just over an hour to complete the first half of the match.

Vikings again failed to stamp their authority on the meeting at the gate, and that, plus too many mechanical failures and the inability of certain riders to team ride, lost them the match. The match started in an amazing way with both Newport’s opening two riders, Neil Street

OTD 50 years ago - in a meeting scattered with incidents and disappointments, Hull Vikings slumped to their fifth and heaviest British league home defeat, when they went down 43-35 to Newport at the Boulevard, and once again, it was mainly Vikings’ own failings which cost them.

A disastrous meeting for Mitch Graham, he was excluded under the two minutes in his first ride and then retired in all three of his other rides with bike problems. #HullNeedsSpeedway
