NCAA softball coaches like to say how much they love kids to be “multi-sport” athletes. And too many of those kids take that to an extreme. So while you play another sport over winter, taking 6 months off pitching, the kid who’s working harder may get the softball offer instead.

Softball tryout season is right round the corner for most. Be sure to ask in advance because there are clubs who REQUIRE you to see their pitching coach to play there. This can be good and bad, depending on the coach. But some clubs do not make this optional. Be sure to ask.

Could you imagine telling someone that in 25 years the top 3 pitchers in women’s softball would all be from the Midwest, none from California? Bahl, Canaday, and Kavan all grew up about 2-2.5 hrs apart. I think this shows the teams, pitchers and coaching are catching up to CA!.

A lot of pitchers going into Colorado this week will learn the hard way how important the dropball is. Quite often the CO thin air forces pitchers to adjust their game strategy because, the majority of HR's this week will be off riseballs. Play the % and keep the ball down!.

It’s amazing how many coaches and teams want a great pitcher on their team but so few coaches are willing to go through the growing pains necessary to develop her into that greatness. Unless the coach’s kid is the pitcher, they tend to get more leeway to develop. Sad.

It's doubtful this is what the NCAA had in mind when they adopted both NIL and transfer portal policies. Mark my words, the next chapter in all of this will be coaches wanting recruits to sign multi-year deals before they sign. That's the only logical next step in all this.

It’s really unfortunate that so many girls do not factor in where they will continue to improve as a pitcher when making their college decision. A scholarship doesn’t mean she should stop trying to get better, quite the opposite actually.

I wish more young pitchers understood the need for 21 outs per game, they don’t have to be strike outs. Great pitchers get those out even when they don’t have their best stuff in games. Game changer and other similar apps seem to put too much emphasis on stats.

It's amazing all the graphs, charts, scouting reports etc. all these NCAA softball coaches have at their fingertips for pitch calling, yet so many lack situational awareness. To me, this is pitch calling 101: keep the ball down when protecting less than 2 runs past 5th inning.

It’s incredibly hard to throw overhand to 1st on a comebacker after several innings of pitching underhand. Softball pitchers should take EVERY opportunity to throw overhand in between innings. Every chance.

Imagine how many softball hitting coaches don't teach, or even know the first thing about picking a pitcher. Knowing whats coming is 1/2 the battle. Since the majority of pitchers do zero to hide their pitch, its sad girls arent taught how to use it to their advantage in hitting.

PSA's: the same college coach who claims to love "multisport" kids also take notice of who improves annually and who doesn't. It's sad how many kids think those coaches mean to put down their glove for 3-5 months. Other sports are fun & breaks are needed, its a delicate balance.

I don't know how tourney directors sleep at night sometimes, collecting every nickel they can from everyone on weekends but they won't even pay a local kid min wage to keep the field in safe playing condition. Forcing 10yr olds to pitch in Grand Canyon sized holes is sick.

Coaching for wins and for pitcher’s improvement aren’t always the same thing. Winning games by throwing 85% riseballs will not help with overall development Pitchers need to work all their pitches not just ones for a coach’s ego and trophies.

Every sports organization should have relationships with local college Sports Psych programs. It's crazy how the most important part of training, the mental, is the most under trained thing we do. Get Sport Psych students to come work with your players, it's a win-win for both.

The majority of NCAA softball coaches are woefully inept at picking pitchers despite the majority of pitchers doing little-nothing to hide their pitches. A coaching seminar on things to look for would change softball forever. Hitting coaches should have a clue how to do it too.

Young kids are usually under the bad idea that the fastest pitchers are the best pitchers. This is WRONG. Command will win more games than velocity. Command is the ability to hit your spot, to change planes with the ball. 21 outs is needed to win they don't all have to be K's!!.

One of the hardest things is teaching a young pitcher they will have bad innings, games, tournaments and yes even seasons. And this INCLUDES lessons. You can have off days during lessons just as easy as game days. Don't be so hard on yourself as you learn. It takes time. A lot.
