Bands of bluish water-ice clouds surround the polar cap. The northern extent of the dark surface feature Acidalia Planitia was visible through a large gap in the clouds (near image center).

On November 19, 2022 (late-winter in the northern hemisphere), images from the EMM/EXI camera system revealed the fully-developed winter expanse of the North Polar Cap (formed by surface deposits of frost and ice composed of frozen carbon-dioxide and water).

Geo maps show aurora occurrence on Mars from EMM EMUS data. Aurora is frequent in strong vertical crustal field regions and very weak ones with open magnetic topology (field lines connected to the collisional atmosphere).
