Happy 327th Birthday, Mr Hogarth!
This assertive self-portrait of William #Hogarth, who was born #OnThisDay in 1697, shows the artist at the height of his influence. Visit the @YaleArtGallery to view this painting. Image: Hogarth, "Self-Portrait," ca. 1735, oil on canvas, @YaleBritishArt, Paul Mellon Collection

Hogarth revised "The Bench" OTD in 1764 but was too poorly to work the next day. Taken to his home in Leicester Fields weak "yet remarkably cheerful" he died there on 25th. Someone added "This would have been better explained had the Author lived a Week longer" to the plate.

Thornhill decorated these, probably when he visited the Netherlands in 1711. He wasn't accustomed to painting on ceramics but these are a tour de force and a precious family heirloom - were they ever kept at @HogarthsHouse #Chiswick where his widow lived with the Hogarths?
The Thornhill Plates: This set of plates descended to Thornhill's daughter, Jane, who had married the painter William Hogarth. After Jane died, there was an auction of her possessions in 1790, where this set was purchased by the writer and connoisseur Horace Walpole for £3.10s.

Excellent meeting this afternoon between #WilliamHogarth Trust & senior staff who manage @HogarthsHouse, exploring future plans & how we could work more closely together. Friendly, creative & we should do it more often!

The Trust sent comments to @LBofHounslow on the application for a Food Market in #Chiswick. Though the Licensing Panel listed us with the opposition we just want them to ban food stalls round the Hogarth Statue to avoid cooking grease damaging the bronze & to retain its dignity!

Hear, Hear, but why gradually? Its the obvious conclusion! WH did love animals, though. We've recently installed replicas of 2 pet memorials long lost from Hogarth's House garden - the oldest one (1760), probably originally WH's work, was for Dick the Drake. Fairholt sketch 1853
Gradually coming to the conclusion that the most consequential figure in British art history was this fellow. (Hogarth, not the dog.)

#Goldstatecoach was constructed during the time when #Hogarth was Serjeant Painter to the King - did he get a little cut from the contracts as part of his perks?

A special thank you from the Trust to all the donors who waited throughout the pandemic before we could celebrate their generosity! Alan & Tracey have done a stunning piece of work - we're tremendously impressed.
Happy #NationalPetDay! We thought today would be the perfect time to share our newly-installed #Hogarth Pet Memorials in the #MulberryGarden, generously fundraised by @HogarthProgress

OTD 1729 ##WilliamHogarth, 32, & #JaneThornhill, 20, were married at the parish church in Paddington. William had obtained the licence 3 days before, but Jane's father had not given permission. Soon reconciled, they moved in with the Thornhills. It was a long & happy marriage

Philanthropist John Passmore Edwards presented a white marble bust of #WilliamHogarth to the new #ChiswickTownHall - not a very good likeness but a magnificent gesture! @LBofHounslow
The #Chiswick Town Hall officially opened in February 1901. The building was originally the Vestry Hall, completed in 1876. It was later expanded with designs by A. Ramsden. Additions included a Council Chamber, Committee room and the Hogarth Hall. https://t.co/xPXuS93Ut4

Fantastic news - can't wait to see #Hogarth's staircase paintings looking their best again! We know how hard it is to raise this kid of money, so it is a tremendous achievement. Thanks, @HeritageFundUK
