He played his final game against Exeter in 1966, and in his last two years with the club he had an informal coaching role, paving the way for a new way of playing and the era of Chalkie White before returning home.

Martin brought a new attitude to coaching, at the time the responsibility of the captain. He was club captain himself between 1960 and 1963, also captaining Midland Counties to a 3-3 draw with South Africa in 1960.

The New Zealander had played for Auckland before work brought him to the county. His first match was in September 1956, where he was No.8 and kicked a penalty. Playing 272 times, he started mostly as a goal kicking lock.
