As an #EarlyModern historian, I find the post-Dissolution afterlife of monastic buildings fascinating. The room behind the low wall in the centre of the photo was the main kitchen at Tintern Abbey, repurposed in the #17thcentury as a cottage. Photo 19.12.24. @cadwwales #abbeys

#otd 29 Dec. 1170, Thomas Becket murdered at Canterbury. There's a legend that as a young priest he served at Winterbourne (Wilts.) & said mass at nearby Clarendon Palace . No evidence for this, tho' as Archbishop he visited Clarendon in 1164. More at:

It is great to see the full volume online at last; a real team effort. The 'surrounding area' of Chippenham includes the parishes of Bremhill, Christian Malford, Hardenhuish, Kington Langley, Kington St Michael, and Langley Burrell, as well as settlements within those parishes.
