D Discrimination is known to impact physical and mental health, but a new study led by a Virginia Commonwealth University researcher links discrimination to negatively impacting sleep as well. https://t.co/CcaOq8KXbx

The study showed that experiences of discrimination can lead to taking longer to fall asleep, spending more time awake at night, and worse overall sleep quality.

I don’t think I really announced it on here but I’ve gone back to grad school. For one of my classes I wrote this article. A special thank you to @KeyrisNews, @jajacobs_ & @TylerJThrasher for talking to me. https://t.co/03xaNPqNBT

Taking a walk to reduce stress? Where you take that walk matters, says @jer_science of @ScienceMusofVA & @VCUWilderSchool. "We basically showed that walking in a shady, quiet neighborhood was like going to a therapist, trainer and outdoor thermal oasis all at the same time."
Walking in urban green spaces is better for us than walking in gray spaces. A professor of urban and regional planning and studies describes how we can get more out of our city walks — and how cities can be designed to reduce stress and improve health. https://t.co/UvOu1EyugF

This is a story I’m truly glad I got to work on. I enjoyed learning about Terry’s story & the impact he had on everyone around him. I originally got into journalism because I love telling other people’s stories & I’m so happy I can do that at @VCUnews
Terry Austin retired last month after serving as VCU’s director of bands for 36 years. A retirement concert was held in his honor, filled with music, former colleagues and students and memories.

Originally, the @rvasymphony asked @VCUarts alum Matt Lively to paint a mural, but he suggested doing something that would tie the visual arts together. 🎨📯 https://t.co/3BQTCsX5jG

The VCU alum’s ongoing project is a case of ‘artist supporting artist’ and is giving him fresh insight into the intricacies of making beautiful music.

I’m dismayed by the layoffs we’re seeing at newsrooms around Virginia and across the country. Our local press does incredible work informing folks, seeking truth, and reporting accurately, and it’s frightening to watch newsrooms shrink over the years.
