Enjoyed speaking about ‘The Way Forward’ for GB Ice Hockey and the untapped social and commercial value of the sport this morning. Great to also share the stage with the brilliant Robert Fitzpatrick of @BelfastGiants and Helena Mueller of @GrantThornton

This is an important period of time for Great Britain Men. NextGen players must be given the opportunity they deserve as we plan for a 4-8 year cycle. This will allow new stars to step up and shine, and complement the existing group of brilliant GB players 🇬🇧

Calling any sports fans, players, officials, or coaches that see this, as it’s a big topic within the wider sports industry. Are you in favour of a single, accountable governing body responsible for the growth and good-order of your sport UK-wide, or multiple separate bodies?

Took this when we visited Hillsborough in 2022 (won’t say why I wasn’t in the Boardroom :)) … less said about the result the better but what an honour. To see #SWFC in this situation, after so many warning signs, is deeply concerning. I hope the situation is resolved, properly.

The tone of the FT story felt more befitting of 1965, not 2025. Good to chat with @ArunSocrates - and very proud of how the entire hockey fanbase, and sports fans in general, have pushed back against this article.
📻 Ice Hockey UK CEO Henry Staelens spoke to BBC Radio Nottingham on Thursday night about the inaccurate portrayal of our female fanbase in a Financial Times article last weekend 🔗 Listen here (from 26:00) ➡️ https://t.co/qkG13iVZs9

Step One: The @FT have subtly changed the title, to deal with the overarching inaccuracy. They've changed from "How romance readers RESCUED British ice hockey" to "How romance readers FOUND British ice hockey". Apology and retraction of the entire piece next.

75% growth in EIHL (c15 years), 1.25m fans last season, plus the thriving leagues below. 65% growth in women's teams (since 2022), GB Women achieving highest ever WC finish, GB U18 Women winning gold. Record public investment. But yes, @FT, 'romance readers rescued the sport'.

I understand that the FT will be addressing the negative response to their article next weekend. Wouldn't it be refreshing if it states "we're sorry, we got it wrong; women attend ice hockey because they love the sport, the atmosphere, feel safe and fully respected". We'll see.

Ice Hockey is the most popular indoor sport in the UK, and stories such as this show a clear lack of respect for the brilliant people who play it, support it and work across it. (END)
