Recent research shows that parents tend to overestimate boys' skills more than girls' in #maths. This becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy in which overconfident kids do better. Should we overrate our children to capitalise on this effect? More here πŸ‘‰

Audio books are great for reluctant or struggling readers. Plug in the tech and let them read along. This helps with all those tricky words.

Build confidence: kids can get lost in the move from standard kids' picture books to the more 'grown up' chapter books. If this is the case, try asking at your library for illustrated versions of books. Don't dismiss comic books or graphic novels!

Find out what they want to read - and it's ok if this is exclusively football stats or stories about unicorns!πŸ¦„ As long as it gives them the bug for reading for pleasure, it could be just the start they need.

Make it a Habit - But Not a Chore Carve out some time in the day that is just for reading. Keep it quiet, relaxed and fun. When mustering enthusiasm for reading is hard work, make it a little more exciting by creating a reading 'den'.

How do you encourage kids to read for pleasure? It might not seem like an important thing in this day and age, but research would suggest that reading for the joy of it sets children up for better personal development, wider general knowledge, and improved mental health.

Can you think of a job that doesn't use an element of Science, Tech, Engineering or Maths these days? Even traditional jobs like farming have come to depend on it for efficiency. And the cornerstone of STEM is maths https://t.co/PUoaucfFoj

Time for some snowflake #maths! It may not be snowing yet, but when it does take some time to look up close - see if kids can spot lines of symmetry (or often 'not quite symmetry', as snowflakes can take quite a bashing as they fall!). Snowflake maths facts πŸ‘‡
