Obviously, loaf/toast isn't a very good rhyme, but I'm pretty sure Larkin originally wrote "their greenness is a kind of growth" (which makes actual sense) then changed it to "grief" for the rhyme.

A few months ago I did this cartoon about Casaubon writing a book about jokes in #Middlemarch. Then last night I read this in Marina Warner’s “No Go The Bogeyman”(1998):.“But it would be a Casaubon’s task to cover all the permutations of humour . ”.#NothingNewUnderTheSun , eh?.
