NHS staff across the country are, as always, playing their part in response to this week's riots. But we shouldn’t let dedication to duty disguise the fact that seeing this flare-up of racism will leave many colleagues feeling afraid and unwelcome. ➡️

1. Acknowledge the situation and ask how they are feeling 2. Listen to their thoughts and feelings on the matter 3. Provide adjustments as necessary to support them Do not attempt to downplay the magnitude of what is happening. I can assure you this will not be well received.

Having spoken to friends, it's a shame to hear such variation in peoples experiences of how managers/leaders have handled the events of the past week. These are paradigm-shifting events for many of your staff and colleagues. Give them the time, attention & empathy they deserve.

After 3 years, it is with sadness that I leave the @NHSinBlkCountry - a wonderful organisation full of wonderful people. But equally I am delighted to be starting my new role with the @NHS_WMCA tomorrow. It feels like the day before the first day at school! 🎒
