In the early 20th century, reformers waged war against slums, but the so-called slums of New York and other cities were complex, and contained not only impoverished people and awful housing, but businesses, entrepreneurs, and upwardly mobile families. https://t.co/wA4YusC7cp

More than 1/3 of construction workers are foreign-born. Going from 10% to 5% of a workforce is one thing, but going from 50%, which it is in California and Texas, to a much lower share, could have really big shocks to the housing market. @samdelouya @CNN

President-elect Donald Trump’s plan to deport millions of undocumented immigrations may backfire, driving up the cost of homebuying even further.

In 2023, a record 22 million renter households spent over 30% of their income on housing. Rents rose faster than incomes, making it hard for renters to keep up with rising costs. (we're transitioning to Bluesky - see you there! https://t.co/WntAFRFcCt)

The @uscensusbureau recently released the first major components of the ACS survey for 2023, and they provide several important data points relevant for housing trends. Here are ten notable stories in the new data: https://t.co/FVB2WFeEX3

At least 146,000 public school students in New York City, about one in eight, did not have permanent housing at some point during the past school year, a record number and a 23% increase from the year before. @clairemfahy @nytimes

A record 146,000 students did not have permanent housing, state data shows, as the city dealt with an ongoing housing crisis and an influx of migrants.

A lot of interesting data in the recent @Harvard_JCHS study on changes in household growth. We're about to see a very large increase in 80+ households that our sprawling development patterns & underproduction of housing options leaves us woefully unprepared for.

The dwindling supply of low-rent units has worsened cost burdens but recently, rent growth has slowed dramatically, in part because a lot of new housing has been built in cities like Phoenix, where rents have dropped 2.9% year over year. @politico

Millions of people live in homes that are falling into disrepair, even becoming uninhabitable, making the shortage of affordable housing worse, and they are disproportionately lower-income, Black or Hispanic, and seniors on fixed incomes. @JenniferLudden

Older homes are the only ones many Americans can afford, but they are costly to fix and maintain, especially for seniors. A patchwork of programs to help are underfunded and have years-long waitlists.
