Prithviraj Sukumaran's Tamil filmography has its own fan base ❤️
The versatility he has shown in just 10 films and to have made a lasting impression in a different industry is just amazing!
There are many talks about
#Baby
. All characters are flawed, yes, but I feel very strongly that the pov wasn't neutral. Besides the most talked about first shot and last shot that begins and ends with Anand, evoking sympathy, there is a lot more to it.🧵
Watching

Udhayanidhi intro....silence
Fahadh intro...silence
Thought I almost chose a wrong theatre and the camera pans to Vadivelu....the theatre erupts with whistles and cheers
What space do women have in Lokesh Kanagaraj's films?
An archery queen, a twin drug lord, a teacher who helps the kids in prison — all are interesting ideas for strong female characters but the problem is they remain just that.
Do read.
In
#Jailer
, Rajinikanth visits a psychiatrist as he is disturbed and struggles to sleep. I thought Nelson is going to make up for his weak portrayal in Beast. How impactful would it have been to see the superstar's character prioritise his mental health!
But no, I was wrong.
#Sivakarthikeyan
and Yogi Babu are wonderful in
#Maaveeran
. The theatre was whooping, clapping and laughing all through the first half.
#MadonneAshwin
's writing, in terms of the characters as well as the narrative flow, is the backbone of this film. (1/5)
From when did emotional, warm and felt like a hug become the main adjectives of
#KoffeeWithKaran

This episode with Ranveer Singh and Deepika is all heart.
No one understands work-from-home difficulties.
My grandmother randomly starts narrating a 50-year-old tale and doesn't stop even after I tell her several times that I'm working.
In Varuthapadaatha Vaalibar Sangam (2013), Sivakarthikeyan delivers a lengthy dialogue supporting a social cause. Soori, who plays his friend, cheers him from the sidelines for standing up. But when Sivakarthikeyan asks him to voice out...(1/3)
Something about
@Kavithamarai

The hashtags of

or

and every celebrity tweeting in support of him are just making things escalate. There was no need for this. The issue was never about one man but about the thousands who went to watch him perform. (1/n)
I completed two years at my workplace, did my first video interview and will go to OFFICE for the first time (yeah, that's rare for some) but my overthinking brain is busy doing something else...
Anyway, here's my first video interview, please watch.
The classic 'Munnadi Pinnadi' scene in Panchathanthiram that left us rolling on the floor laughing was improvised on the set and shot within 30 minutes.
Spoke to Yugi Sethu as Kamal Haasan's chaotic comedy turns 21, a film that has a new joke for you every time you rewatch it.
Whenever the five of us were together, we'd always be in character and improvise: Yugi Sethu breaks down a few hilarious scenes from Kamal Haasan's iconic comedy
#Panchathanthiram
, which turned 21 this week —
@Harshini_SV
Soori backs off, adding, “Na sonna sirichuruvaanga pa,” (If I say all of this, they will laugh), reiterating the general myth that comedians cannot be accepted in profound roles. Yet a decade later, Soori proves his own dialogue wrong (2/3)
The film seems to not side with her many times. Be it when her happy college days are intercut with Anand struggling or when she tells off Viraj after a bad argument but he begins to blackmail her. Yes, she blackmails him first but the music supports Viraj.
Probably, having both sides feels like a neutral POV. But when one perspective overpowers the other, it is hardly neutral. Just because we include everyone's perspective, it doesn't give the intended effect, especially when the editing, music and dialogues say something else.
@Dir_Lokesh
Big fan of yours. It was interesting to see how you kept everything ambiguous before the film's release. It's like you let your work talk for itself. Whatever the criticism is about
#Leo
, maybe just let your next film talk. Bcz in
#LokeshKanakaraj
we trust. 🧵
That said, a lot of these are written differently in the second half. Her father who was probably shown with silences here and there, finally, explicitly stands with her. She gets a long monologue to tell what all of it meant to her. But the ending shot undoes all of it again.
Amidst varying opinions about
#Salaar
, I had a lot to love about this film. But even a month after I'd watched the film, the angle of using "threat of sexual violence" as a tool to establish the character arc and development of the hero is still bothering me.🧵
Cuteness specialist, Ramayana reference in Varsham, how it is tough for Prabhas to crack the next step because his stardom is unique & he has no reference point...some really interesting observations!
Watch the Prabhas before & beyond Bahubali

It left the whole nation asking why Kattappa killed Baahubali for one whole year...
When looked carefully, we can see how Rajamouli is skilled at leaving the audience curious with goosebump moments, most of his interval scenes are like practice sessions for this one epic ending
Completing two years
@FilmCompanion

The symbolism of the dogs in
#Maamanan
is arguably the best of Mari Selvaraj metaphors.
If you see it from Veeran's pov, it is a reflection of Rathnavel & power. (The drawing pig vs. dog)
But from Rathnavel's pov, they are like people below him, who make him feel powerful.
As he makes us feel his grief and anguish as the innocent yet strong-willed cop in Viduthalai Part 1.
@sooriofficial
, however, has not been the first to bust this myth. Wrote about other Kollywood comedians who have performed in the lead. Do read.
There are people who have hardly watched 5-6 films, some who have watched only commercial films and a few others who don't watch those films that are most hyped about.
We should normalise not watching films or not knowing about some films...it's just a hobby
This one person i met at bus, When i asked her have you watched Modern love she was Like "What is it" after then i asked do you know "Thiagarajan Kumararajaa" she said no! Cher paravala you know Super Deluxe right nuh Ketan! Ilayae Kelvi pattadhu ila nuh said! I was Like 🫨.
#STARMOVIE
is a mixed bag. It overstuffs but also doesn't tell us how Kavin's Kalai falls in love with acting or how he pursues it. There is magic in the first half that feels special albeit being familiar. But when it takes a different route, the film begins to feel distant
There is something special about a beach...
The roaring waves rise and fall with a rhythm that when they finally reach the shore, the sound gradually fades...and a sense of relief and tranquillity embraces you.
When she roams around with Viraj, you get a scene of Anand being beaten up by the money lender. You see her call his gifts dappa, you see her as a materialistic person who also doesn't think twice before taking a dig at her lover's financial status.
Yeah...but the joy of watching
#CookWithComali
is slowly reducing. Many jokes don't land, the cooks don't seem to impress anymore and the atmosphere is getting more serious, there is very little fun to enjoy.
When she chooses to avoid her old friend and not attend Anand's calls, when she chooses to kiss Viraj, when her parents approve of her makeover - you of course see why she does it from her pov but there is always some other layer that shows her in bad light.
That silhouette shot of
#MAAMANNAN
& a young Veeran was so poetic at the interval cut. Perfectly placed. But the film was underwhelming after that.
That said Idk if
#Maaveeran
actually had a second-half problem. It just had a really good setup and a slightly unconvincing climax
First half: good, second half: weak. How often have you seen a Tamil film described this way?
@somwya_rajen
finds out why Tamil cinema is plagued by the second-half problem.
We talk a lot about films, reviews, making techniques, BTS ideas & more. But sometimes what brings more joy is this whole cinema-going experience and the little memories associated with it
As
@riachops
puts it,
#Barbenheimmer
is all about that experience
Probably Modern Love Chennai is best watched when you take breaks after each episode. Watched 'Paravai Kootil Vaazhum Maangal' on Saturday and just finished watching 'Margazhi' which is blissful. The feeling lingers even after the episode has ended.
Whattt....CBE is worse. Even yesterday, I paid extra. Chennai is much better. They request for extra cash and are even ready to drop us if we deny. But here, they demand, argue and cancel the ridesss.
It's totally different in coimbatore. I asked the auto driver if they don't ask for extra money there like in chennai. He said they are all IPS Annamalai avl' s followers and they won't do such immoral things.
So many people have revealed about the Guna song connect in
#ManjummelBoys
but that's not a spoiler...bcz no one can put in words how exactly it feels when the song actually hits you ❤❤
#MAAMANNAN
is a haunting experience like every Mari Selvaraj film. But the second half is too mainstream for his brand
The win mattered but the path looked very easy. There were casteist political moves yet they were won quickly. The video move was not just cliche but convenient
Finally watched
#Maamannan
. Some spoiler-filled thoughts:
- Felt it is Mari Selvaraj's least impactful film (that doesn't mean it's a poor film in any way) despite featuring some incredibly affective stretches of filmmaking.
- The second half was too verbose and generic. I mean,
#JailerFDFS
Nelson is back and how!
The film does suffer from an overlong screenplay yet
#Jailer
is a stylistic blend of Nelson's unique voice and Rajinikanth's mass presence.
Some conversations are really special. Loved watching

@nivedhithaa_Sat
about how she approached the role & her wish to do films that focus on different relationships.

I have always been fond of the way
@actorkishore
pulls off his performances with ease. And it was a double treat for me to see him in both
#PonniyanSelvan1
and
#Kantara
. Got to speak with him about the films, what he looks for in his scripts, and his perspectives.
#Aattam
is a powerful film, driven by dialogues that force you to question yourself and others. But probably, it hits you hard when the scenes go silent; when the dialogue ends...
When she does a makeover, you see approving parents who trust their daughter and give her the freedom that most Indian girls are rejected of. But her parents are shown in glimpses, as naive, strange and absent.
There is no injustice in providing jobs for the deserving and eligible Tamil graduates in Tamil Nadu. Injustice is when those jobs are given to others, forcing the qualified graduates to work in Swiggy & Zomato for their livelihood.
#TamilnaduJobsForTamils
#PonniyinSelvan
2 is intimate, emotional and engrossing, with some wonderful close-ups and music.
Even when the camera zooms out to give us a bird's eye view, the frames feel warm and personal - like when Vandhiyathevan and Kundavai meet in an islet.
A few might find
@iamsanthanam
's
#DDReturns
formulaic, silly and sometimes frustratingly funny. But as a horror comedy, it is meant to be all those. It isn't a perfect one, but don't take the film too seriously, and you're in for some good fun.
"Pei kooda game show (A game show with ghosts) is a refreshing premise in Kollywood’s favourite horror-comedy genre and

Kaadhal Enbadhu Kannula Heart Irukkura Emoji in

There is so much cinema within this cinema, of Minnale BGM, Neelambari reference, no breakup songs for women and more
But it is also very realistic...
#Lover
, besides addressing the toxicity in a relationship, doubles up as a movie about growing up and taking control of your life. It’s mostly about Arun, yes. But one day when Arun’s mother (
@kailasam_geetha
) elatedly tells him she drove the scooter alone and wasn’t scared🧵
Honestly, the film has its own flaws. But it doesn't matter because it keeps you engaged for the most part. Just the comedy scenes with Vijay Sethupathi voiceovers are enough to make it worth your time. Watch
#Maaveeran
in theatres, you'll definitely have a lot of fun (5/5)
Was talking to a friend and she made me realise how in a few episodes of
#ModernLoveChennai
, they actually end up in arranged marriage......Modern enga...love enga?
Every time there is a new
@darshanarajend
film, we get to see a new shade of the actor. Got a chance to speak to her about Purusha Pretham and her interesting acting choices.
But the takeaway from this conversation has to be her obsession with learning new hobbies and skills😄
"I love that I get to play characters that are nothing like what the viewers expect out of me" :
@darshanarajend
tells
@Harshini_SV
about
#PurushaPretham
and why maverick roles keep her going.
By the looks of the reviews and TL, I might be the only one who enjoyed
#JapanMovie
. I walked in with the thought of embracing whatever silliness the film throws at me, and I think it kind of worked.🧵
The versatile filmography of
@TheVishnuVishal
has always amazed me. But
#GattaKusthi
took it up a notch. It was wonderful talking to him about the behind-the-scenes of the ROFL interval scene with
#AishwaryaLekshmi
and playing the nearly-misogynist (but not) Veera
He isn't hesitant to accept that Aditi Shankar has more power and confidence than him. Likewise, the film's big strength is its humour. Not just Yogi Babu and Sivakarthikeyan, even Aditi Shankar, Sarita and others have rib-tickling dialogues that bring the house down(4/5)
#PonniyinSelvan
, in a sense, is a character study of Nandini, brought to life by
#AishwaryaRai
. While she wields her mystic beauty to deceive her foes in the first part, we learn about her hurtful past in the sequel - mostly through her eyes that swap charm for pain & chaos.
For all those who liked
#JigarthandaDoubleX
but have mixed thoughts, I think
@reviewpuram
's review covers why the film feels a little distant & how if the scenes were let to breathe and not rushed, there would've been an even stronger emotional connect.
From sacrificial goat to hashtags and 90% success & 10% loss, sorry to break it, but the bad damage control is only further damaging his reputation.
People are expecting a little empathy from the artist, the one they admire and love dearly. Is that too much?
Sometimes we dream of something huge, something that seems impossible to reach...and then we reach that space but it's not as exciting as we thought, the joy doesn't hit us.
And that's okay...
Spoke to
@kishendas
about his film Sync on
@ahatamil
and the kind of promotions he has been doing. Such an honest person with so much passion towards cinema and content creation. It was a wonderful conversation.
The text interview will be out

I was wondering where all my earnings go....to the auto and taxi drivers from Ola and Uber who keep charging extra 20s, 50s and 100s🥲
In Coimbatore, please use your own vehicles or travel by bus.
When I stopped for coffee, I saw this board stuck with paid bills in a shop. If anyone is hungry and can't afford to pay, they can use this already-paid bill and have food for free.
Such small gestures make a big difference.
#Chithha
is a heart-rending tale about child abuse. It has a tight screenplay and solid performances that ensure the story reaches you.
The real winner though is the conscious choice to treat the characters with much empathy and sensitivity.
Everyone is waiting for SRK, me waiting to see villain

Especially the last image gives SJ Suryah from Mersal vibes.
Aoko Matsuda writes in "The Woman Dies", "She is raped so that the man can be angry about it. She is raped to spark his vengeful spirit...Raped to make him feel like annihilating the enemy. Even we realize that this is a terrible thing to happen. We swallow nervously."

With different areas, different moods of Chennai are reflected in Kollywood Romances.
The city becomes an integral part of love stories, where from the streets the lovers roam to the way they think and behave, Chennai is present everywhere
Do read:
When she kisses Viraj, you partly see the validation she finally receives, one that she has been seeking for so long. But you are also shown her as someone who sends an "I love you" message to her lover and cheats behind, while Anand kisses her photo dreamily.
#Star
has some really beautiful moments you'd take back home. Kavin gets a kutty introduction sequence and faces a minor loss, which is followed by a heroic superstar ref moment. And you soon sense the pattern. No matter how many setbacks he faces, he makes a heroic comeback.
Aditi Shankar is effortlessly a part of this world. While her character is important, Madonne could have written more scenes involving her. The same goes for Sarita, who plays Sivakarthikeyan's mother. But his conscious effort to focus on the women makes
#Maaveeran
wholesome(2/5)
In one of the scenes, Sivakarthikeyan (a cartoonist) tells Aditi Shankar (sub-editor), "When even you can't fight, how can I." This moment and a few other instances where the hero is vulnerable, ordinary and sometimes scared make for the winning points of Maaveeran. (3/5)
I am not saying
#Japan
is a must-watch film that you'll definitely enjoy (Absolutely NOT). But it's a silly, over-the-top film that I enjoyed watching; that more often it left me laughing at its absurdity than being annoyed.
(ok bye 🙊)
Watching Omana (Jyotika) fight for a divorce after 20 years in

made me think of her life as a parallel one to Divya from Mouna Raagam, only that after a love failure and a forced arranged marriage she didn't get the ideal husband and love that Divya got.

#Leo
has a terrific
#Vijay
who gives a very matured performance. He helps you get into the head of Parthi, in a film that largely focuses on who he is and his inner battle. But the long flashback, underwritten villains and some writing choices don't help.
Exactly, people just underestimate the power of fiction. It can do wonders like no other - it is an escape that also helps with self-reflection, relaxation, motivation and joy, and sometimes gives you the space to release your emotions.
Self help is a great genre (i read tons of it) but lol, fiction is the OG category of self help...do yourself a favour, read some stories :) it will enrich your life like nobody's business ♥️
