Well guys, I’m leaving Twitter. It is a sacrifice I must make for my principles, and because everyone else is. You can find me at better Twitter. You know the one.

Christine Boyle’s official last day on Council is Dec. 12, which is also Christine Sinclair Day in BC. It will be a very Christine-focused Thursday. Anyway after that there will be a by-election. Have Vancouver progressives learned from the last one?

Last night, I went to bed knowing that Donald Trump managed to win re-election. This morning, I woke up, and all I could think was: this is why James Douglas hated democracy.

Trump’s win confirmed my fears. Where the majority rules, members of minority groups can’t feel safe.

In case you missed it, I went all-in on Halloween this year at @TheTyee. 1. The holiday's fascinating history in Vancouver: 2. The excellent Canadian horror film canon and what our scary movies tell us about us:

The Small Boy's reign of terror eventually came to an end when Vancouver police went to war with him in 1923. They called in reserves for a crackdown on Halloween hooliganism. We're not after the Small Boy, they said, just the Older Youth. That did it.

By 1917, the Daily World's Halloween story was a guide to enduring another year of the Small Boy's "devilish ingenuity." Let the doorbell ring twice. If he tricks you, say nothing. Do not reach for your gun. Do not shoot the Small Boy.

Halloween 1901 was much better. It was windy and wet. The Vancouver Daily World celebrated "the small boy having to stay indoors," which meant that the West Enders' gates were still there in the morning.

On Halloween, the small boy in Vancouver was a menace. He stole garden gates and wagons. He greased railroad tracks. He carried a little toy gun. According to one report, Halloween 1907 "proved too favorable for the small boy and his tricks."

Bonus Twitter content: who is the most frightening Halloween character in early Vancouver? The witch? The ghost? Nope. It's the Small Boy, old-timey journalese for one or several teenagers making mischief. Vancouver Daily World, 1915:

Happy Halloween! Fun fact: while the holiday itself was imported from Europe, the trick-or-treating part of it appears to have originated here, in Vancouver. My latest in @TheTyee:.
