Encampments DO pose a threat to public safety as those staying in tents are part of the public & living outside is unsafe. This attempt to dehumanize community members living w/out housing, food security, health care etc. is infuriating. We will have more to say on this #halifax

Rather than rallying for tidier parks and incarcerating our neighbours, our energies should be poured into demanding the realization of basic human rights for everyone. #halifax #encampments #housingisahumanright

Semester 3 BScN students worked with local businesses and organizations to collect donations of sunscreen and protein drinks for @MOSHHalifax clients. They filled the MOSH van with the donations! Way to go!

Pretty frustrating watching the numbers at every existing encampment site in HRM grow and grow - while also seeing brand new sites popping up all over town. Shelters are all so busy too. Clearing out Vic Park and Grand Parade accomplished what exactly?

Hearing that conditions in the HI QEII are completely deplorable. No water, no heat. Patients and staff pooping in commode hats without place to dispose of them. All of this in a setting already riddled with stool born infectious outbreaks! Can anyone confirm or comment?

As another storm approaches #Halifax, various outreach teams in the city again scramble to help unhoused clients get somewhere inside (few and far between) or batten down the hatches to keep themselves dry and warm. This cycle is wearing out everyone involved.

Tearing down homeless encampments in the winter doesn't mean people get into shelter, it means you just took away the last level of protection against the freezing cold for many people.

NS Public Health confirms what we have been seeing in #NovaScotia. An increase in drug poisonings due to fentanyl and highly dangerous contaminated drugs on the unregulated market. I suggest accessible drug testing and a Safer Supply for those who need it.

Later, at Peace & Friendship Park, I noticed a similar setup with power sources installed among the trees being used for pretty holiday lights. I don’t know. It feels like a pretty simple solution to being a bit of comfort to this vulnerable group. No? What am I missing? 7 of 7.

Am I naive to think we should prioritize warmth and comfort for people living outside above the holiday lights? The boom trucks could easily and safely access these units and run cords to each tent. This could power a light, a way to charge a phone, a heat source. 6 of 7.

Some people staying at the site hadn’t noticed, others mentioned they assumed they wouldn’t be allowed to use this (kinda) accessible power source. One said she asked & was told “no”. I’m not sure what the official stance from the city would be, but I can wager a guess. 5 of 7.
