Actually, the directors have confirmed that the film will follow the book’s structure and present both timelines in parallel.
@IrateMaxwell @HailMaryLogs Seems like they're gonna tell the story in a linear way. I'd love for them to tell the story like it's told in the book but I understand that it could be tiring in a movie.

I love that the directors preserved the progression of Ryland and Rocky's early encounters: starting with the tiny window, then Rocky telling Ryland to retreat to his ship, and finally the moment when they face each other on opposite sides of a transparent wall. #ProjectHailMary

Phil Lord, director of PHM, on adapting the novel for the screen: "We worked hard to honor the spirit and integrity of the book at all times. So even though the movie isn't long enough to include every detail we loved from the book we tried never to take any shortcuts."

@HailMaryLogs As someone who had not read the book before seeing the first trailer, I was meh UNTIL I saw the alien reveal. Then I got interested and got the audiobook and now after seeing the 2nd trailer I am soooo hyped. Trailers needed to reveal Rocky to get the non book readers excited.

The extra shots include Ryland saying where he works, a view of the laboratories on the aircraft carrier, a wider shot of the scene with the projector lights on Ryland, extra shot with Eva Stratt, and a look at the Hail Mary crew.
