9) Sushkevych is still the President of the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee and is in Beijing for the start of the Winter Games. He was also appointed Commissioner of the President of Ukraine for the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in May 2019 by President Volodymyr Zelensky.

8) Ukraine has finished in the top 6 in the medals table at the last five Summer Paralympics and finished in the top 5 in the medals table at the last 4 Winter Games. An extraordinary achievement for the country.

7) By creating a nationwide Para sports system of recruitment and training available in every region of the country, the Invasport system has helped to transform the successes of the Ukrainian Paralympic team at both the Summer and Winter Paralympics.

6) Because Invasport’s facilities are spread across the country, Ukraine's Paralympians were able to continue to train even when the national team training base in Crimea was taken over by Russia in 2014.

5) Invasport works by having youth facilities dedicated to Paralympic sports. The programme mixes together education, sport and rehabilitation for people with disabilities. Valeriy and his team developed infrastructure in all regions of Ukraine to implement the programme.

4) He subsequently ensured that the Paralympic movement in Ukraine received its own budget separate from the Olympic budget. Sushkevych used this Paralympic budget to develop a pioneering programme called Invasport.

3) When he was at college, Valery became a para swimmer before founding a sports club where athletes with disabilities could train. In 1991, Ukraine declared its independence from the Soviet Union and Sushkevych decided to form the Ukrainian Paralympic Committee.

2) The country has only been competing in the Paralympics since Atlanta 1996. In just 20 years, the Ukrainian team rose from 44th in the medals table in Atlanta to 3rd in Rio in 2016. And much of the credit for this goes to Valery Sushkevych.
