✊We urgently call on all Civil Society actors and activists across the EU to apply pressure on EU authorities to demand that the suspension is lifted. The right to seek asylum is fundamental, not optional.

Besides being unlawful, breaching Greek and International law alike, the decision is expected to escalate violence at the #EUborders, further endangering the lives of #peopleonthe move seeking international protection in Greece.

‼️In what constitutes a gross violation of fundamental human rights, last week, the #Greek government voted in favour of the suspension of the processing of #asylum applications for people arriving to #Greece by boat from North Africa, for a period of three months.

✊Today and every day, HRLP stands with all people on the move in search of safety or opportunity. Today and every day we will fight against exclusionary politics and violent border regimes, until we guarantee safe and dignified migration pathways for all.

As Greek authorities continue to use the #criminalization of people on the move as a deterrence tactic for people seeking international protection, HRLP will continue to call out the blatant disrespect of the rule of law and gross violations of displaced people’s rights.

⚖️ The law is clear: #Displaced people should not be punished for smuggling. And our position is unwavering: Driving a boat is not a crime, it’s a life-saving measure.

🕊️On the occasion of #WorldRefugeeDay and in light of the recent proceedings at the Samos Court, we want to once again re-affirm the fundamental legal principle of non-penalization of #asylumseekers.

Following HRLP's intervention, the Court declared A.H. innocent, acknowledging that he did not commit the offence of illegal transfer of third-country nationals. A.H. is a recognized refugee.

⚖️SUCCESS STORY - REFUGEE BOAT DRIVER PROVED INNOCENT. On the 12th of June, HRLP lawyers defended A.H., a recognized Sudanese refugee, before the Minors' Court of Samos. A.H. was facing smuggling charges on the grounds of steering a migrant boat, and several years in prison.

Following our latest request for interim measures to the ECHR on behalf of 45 Applicants, the UACs are finally being relocated from the Samos CCAC. A powerful reminder that applying pressure & seeking accountability fosters change✊

Over the past months, HRLP has been making repeated interventions in order to apply pressure on the Greek government to address the horrific living conditions at the #Samos CCAC and take urgent measures to ensure the health & safety of all UACs residing in the #SafeZone.

🚨 SAMOS CCAC SAFE ZONE IS BEING EVACUATED. Following the consistent efforts of local Civil Society actors and those who stood in solidarity, the #SamosCCAC’s Safe Zone for unaccompanied children (UACs) is finally being evacuated.

Notwithstanding that this is an important step towards ensuring the protection of the UACs, it is utterly exasperating that the ECtHR has to intervene for the Greek government to do the bare minimum & provide the children with mere necessities -namely, clean clothes & bed sheets.

⚖️ The @ECHR_CEDH has accepted 2 requests for interim measures submitted by HRLP on behalf of 46 out of the 157 unaccompanied children (UAC) currently residing in the #SamosCCAC Safe Zone.
