We're pleased that the Government has announced a $392 million Industry Growth Program to help small businesses commercialise and grow their companies 🤝 The majority of our 60,000 members are small businesses, so any initiative that helps them grow and innovate is welcomed.

Builders are feeling the effects of the interest rate rises of the last 12 months, but our prediction is that we will start to see consumer confidence pick back up towards the second half of next year. Tim Reardon, HIA's Chief Economist shares his thoughts. #australianeconomy

"The planning system often starts to fall apart due to over-regulation, typically applied at the local government level – an overburden of regulatory/statutory controls often impedes housing stock." HIA Executive Director of Planning Mike Hermon. https://t.co/3k9iIKpQEL #HIA

This is the least affordable Australian housing has been in over a decade. It now requires 1.6 average incomes to affordably service a mortgage on a median-priced home in Australia’s capitals, and more than 1.4 incomes in Australia’s regions. #HIA #HIAEconomics

One policy tool at the disposal of government is to ease the barriers put in place in recent years that restrict first home buyer access to a mortgage. As featured in The Sydney Morning Herald: https://t.co/PbhX57vXeh #HIA #HIAMember #HIAEconomics

The HIA New Home Sales report – Sales of new homes fell again in January, down by 12.8% for the month, leaving sales in the previous three months 46.7% lower than 2022. There is no indication that the market has reached the bottom of this cycle. #HIA #HIAMember #HIAEconomics

The roller coaster ride set to continue as rates rise. A return to stable economic growth will not be achieved by putting the housing sector through boom-and-bust cycles, HIA’s Chief Economist, Tim Reardon. https://t.co/f0g5bgcIb1

This is by far the longest period of time that commencements have exceeded completions. This has created an enormous pool of detached building work that will delay the adverse impact of the cash rate increase on unemployment and risks the RBA going too far and for too long.

Sep Qtr 2022, AUS home builders still struggling to complete the houses they commenced during the pandemic. Record volume still under construction. Lack of skilled trades is the no. 1 constraint on builders now. The return of overseas workers will help in this regard. @HIA_au

A strong building industry is a crucial driver of a strong economy. It is time for the federal government to form a well-rounded and integrated immigration policy, as part of an overall population policy, instead of being driven by an artificial cap on migration. #HIA #HIAMember

The ABS today released its building activity data for the September Quarter 2022. 29,153 detached houses completed in the September Quarter 2022, just 2.5% up on the same time the previous year. The shortage of skilled trades is the top constraint on Australian builders. #HIA
