Overall, the results highlight the importance of language in math learning, and suggest that decomposed labels and common-unit labels may be beneficial for teaching different aspects of decimal magnitude knowledge.

. and reduced incorrect reliance on the hundredths digit for comparisons (e.g., incorrectly saying that 0.39 is more than 0.74 because 9 is greater than 4). (4/x).

Common-unit labels (“sixty-eight hundredths”) had some benefits too - they reduced the tendency to say that decimals with more digits are larger (e.g., incorrectly saying that 0.51 is greater than 0.7) (3/x).

Decomposed labels reduced misconceptions about the meaning of zero: children who learned to say “six tenths and eight hundredths” were less likely to incorrectly say that 0.68 is the same amount as 0.068 and more likely to correctly say that 0.68 is the same as 0.680. (2/x).

How do you say “0.68”? Does it matter for learning? We taught 5th & 6th graders to use either decomposed labels (six tenths and eight hundredths), common-unit labels (sixty-eight hundredths), or point labels (point six eight). @_TIANJing @Ren_Kexin (1/x).

Finally, fiber arts are typically intrinsically motivating, and may encourage viewing failure as an opportunity for learning. Altogether, this can open new avenues into our understanding of spatial cognition and interventions to enhance spatial skills and motivation! (4/4).

We suggest that engaging in fiber arts might be an effective means of improving spatial skills. This is notable because fiber arts are stereotypically feminine, in contrast to the male-gender-typing of many spatial activities like block and Lego construction. (3/4).

We outline how fiber arts practices map onto intrinsic vs. extrinsic and static vs. dynamic spatial thinking. We note that non-rigid, ductile transformations - like bending a string or fabric - are an understudied aspect of spatial skill. (2/4).

New paper from our lab! Spatial skills in 4th grade longitudinally predict students' STEM major choice and help explain gender differences. Math self-concept is a major mediator. @_TIANJing led the study and explains it better than I could below.

Using a national longitudinal dataset (SECCYD; N = 690), we showed that 4th-grade spatial skills directly predicted choosing STEM majors in college, above and beyond math and verbal achievement,...

Despite the tremendous progress women have made in education and the workforce over the past 50 years, men continue to dominate STEM domains. Why do fewer women than men pursue STEM fields in college and beyond?.
