"Waking up?".The deindustrialization of this country was a conscious choice of the rentier ruling class to make a quick buck. The only reason there are overtures now to reindustrialize is because the US cannot wage war effectively to protect oversea imperial interests.
It's amazing to see the rest of the country suddenly waking up to something those of us who were already in the manufacturing community have known for decades. If you don't make your own stuff - you are a "renter", not a "landowner".

I could never teach a junior engineer the ins and outs of my job in one year. It would take 3 at the minimum for an exceptional candidate with 0 previous experience to operate independently.

Laughably incorrect.
Most high skilled careers could be taught to people within a year if you correctly selected for ability. College in and of itself is a giant scam and waste of time and should be modernized.
