We posted the CFP for our IMLS grant to build digital object discovery into ArcLight! We‘ll develop specifications to better define how digital objects relate to archival description. If you’ve worked in this space before in any context, please apply!

My boss's boss position is open, which is probably the most important role in our R1 ARL library. I'm not on the committee and happy to talk about the role. Salary is not listed but was previously ~120k, though I would expect that would have to go up https://t.co/axd7qgy0cs

mailbagit 0.5.1 is up, which now correctly recognizes mbox files exported from Mac Mail (which annoyingly doesn't use the .mbox file extension)

PNGs are good for preservation. You don't need to migrate/normalize them. I am team #PNGforPreservation If you got JPGs already they're fine too, you're not gaining anything by converting them. We gotta get rid of these "compression is not preservation" ideas

I need to look at the ARL numbers more, but at a glance, the institutions that are feeling this the most are probably disproportionately more accessible, diverse, and broadly-focused. Its hard to see how this gets better.

State politicians and though them the public are just not valuing the mission of research libraries. This is a long term crisis for many research libraries. Our department is going to have great collections on NYS politics and the death penalty, until we're not.

So yes, this is austerity from 2008 and 2020, but its also worse than that. NY State has had a historically unique budget surplus and it invested in a big AI initiative that will add 49 TT lines to UAlbany. Libraries are getting zero of these lines.

We have good data at UAlbany to why this is happening. Admins are moving these lines towards efforts that more obviously impact recruitment/retention. While the Libraries have lost staff, other units in "Academic Affairs Support" have gained ~47 FTE in writing and advising.

I can't point to Eira Tansey's work enough here, as she was first to call out the ARL data and described this well as a "multi-decade cycle of poverty that stunts [our] ability to provide adequate care for records and services for users" https://t.co/Dr6RkPNk4u

This isn't feasible when research libraries are losing staff. The median ARL library has lost 24% of FTE since 2000. UAlbany has lost an even 50%, but is not really an outlier, as we're like in the ~10% percentile.
