Grateful to write this editorial on #Sustainability in #irad for @cvirendo. What is the next step to take as a society? Realistically, a top-down approach is needed and @cirsesociety and @SIRspecialists will play a key role here! https://t.co/VspNZddt4n

How would @RCRadiologists shape up? We’d love to see our college sign up for some independent scrutiny of climate ambition and action.
📢 Want to get involved with the Climate and Health Scorecard Project? We'd love to hear from you! 📨 climateandhealthscorecard@gmail.com ⏰18 Nov 2022

Article containing lots of ideas for cutting the environmental impact of IR. Lots of solutions exist. Let’s implement them.
Great review article on sustainability in IR by my colleagues from Monash and Austin Health. A must-read! @JulianMaingard @ronil_chandra @FIavius_P

The surgeons have created a Green Theatre checklist with several points relevant to IR.
Did you know 60% of the carbon footprint of operating theatres is energy for lights, warmers, air con etc? The surgical colleges have produced an evidence-based Green Theatre Checklist to support changes to reduce the carbon footprint of operative care. https://t.co/PC5IlIDfFI

If your department uses GE’s contrast, look at their iodine based contrast recycling scheme.
Iodine, used in #CT and #Xrayimaging, is a non-renewable resource, and only about 18% of the current demand is reused. However, now @GEHealthcare’s recycling program is expanding, helping to support the circular economy. https://t.co/sLgMXiut6g

A good summary of the pros and cons of home working/ hybrid working (link to article below). Home working may also reduce the carbon footprint of individual radiologists. Check the climate impact of home working here:
Time to catch up on summer reading! To be or not to be at the hospital? Work from home? Hybrid model? Healthcare workforce shortage? Pediatric radiologists - Read all about it! https://t.co/3znR7trkAW

Appendix 5 of the national infection prevention and control manual for England has a flow chart for when gloves are needed. https://t.co/ih27y74UZj

Can we reduce the use of disposable gloves in radiology? This guide for nurses highlights when gloves really need to be used, for example, when there is a risk of exposure to contaminated fluids.
Watch and share our #GAW22 film to help highlight how reducing unnecessary glove use is a simple way to make health care more sustainable: https://t.co/TdmSLLgfGm

Following record high temperatures and subsequent wildfires in the UK this week, look out for our article on how radiology can contribute to net zero in your paper copy of @ClinRadiology this month. #GreenerNHS

Avoid rotas that require a change of site half way through the day.

More hybrid/virtual sessions - it’s being done successfully for Consultant CPD so why not for Registrars?

Reduce number of days (not hours) of required central hospital/academy attendance. No more travelling for a single lecture!

2. Time lectures to start conveniently after train arrivals when trains are infrequent

1. Flexible start times for diagnostic sessions if registrars are using public transport to hospitals with poor public transport provision

On the day that Wales provisionally smashes the previous hottest day record of 35.2°C, we have some ideas from radiology registrars* to help them cut travel and transport emissions during training…
1600 UPDATE: Hawarden in Flintshire has now provisionally reached 37.1°C 🌡️ This is the highest air temperature ever recorded in #Wales #Heatwave2022 #heatwave #hottestdayoftheyear

We agree. Definitely #LudicrousWaste. Greener NHS guidelines on procurement should mean that NHS suppliers eventually have to raise their game…but this could easily be changed now.
Exhibit B of #LudicrousWaste in #iRad. A minor thing, for sure, but the ocean is made of tiny drops (soon to be replaced by microplastics). @KimalPlc
