Lastly, Europe’s global role depends on balancing values with pragmatism. We must engage with partners worldwide without compromising democratic foundations. Dependence on authoritarian regimes weakens the EU’s autonomy and credibility. Freedom is responsibility, not restriction.

His second warning: the far right’s erosion of democratic norms cannot become the new status quo. Common values remain embedded in EU treaties, but they must be defended through dialogue, enforcement, and reform. Illiberalism from within is as dangerous as threats from outside.

First, he says, Europe must stop being geopolitically naive. The European project was always a peace project, but it now needs stronger defence capabilities. “We must not let our ideological underpinnings be minimised to a very one-dimensional understanding of pacifism”.

🗣 “The persistence I show today when it comes to defending the freedom of each and every one of us is based on the fact that I know very well what it means not to have it. Some people see my insistence on freedom and liberal democracy as an annoyance or a burden.”.

In Dominika's experience, “the climate movement isn’t dying, but its previous form is.” Evolution makes it more powerful than before.

Finally: compete for rebellious energy by offering practical benefits. The far right has soared by channelling people’s anger. Progressives must now recapture this momentum and show people how climate action can work for them and improve their lives.

Her second insight: build coalitions beyond your usual allies. Poland’s climate movement was a small bubble. Wschód built alliances with trade unions, migrant groups, and feminist movements. Climate justice connects to every social issue.

Her first breakthrough: drop the jargon that alienates people. Lasota deliberately limited the use of words like "climate" and "green" because they had terrible PR in Poland. When people struggle with basic economic survival, telling them about polar bears won’t work.

🗣️“So many climate activists feel nostalgic for 2018, when the movement was big and on the streets. We need to be very brutal with each other and say, ‘Let’s move on.’ The people are somewhere else, and we should be where they are.”.
