Real freedom is about being free FROM domination, arbitrary power, and ecological collapse. It’s the freedom TO work less and care more for family, community, and environment. It’s being able to “make ends meet without contributing to the end of the world”.

Today’s dominant freedom frame reduces liberty to consumer choice in an endless marketplace. Everything becomes consumable, with democracy turned into political marketing.

Modern freedom got trapped in a Faustian bargain with endless growth. Since the Industrial Revolution, we’ve equated liberty with the ability to choose and consume without limits. But on a finite planet, only the privileged few can truly enjoy this “freedom.”

Freedom has been hijacked by reactionary forces posing as the true champions of liberty against “woke” movements. They’ve turned ecology into the enemy – painting climate action as “green fanaticism” and the Green Deal as tyranny. What is the post-growth alternative?🪡

Real freedom touches upon the opportunity to live in a habitable world, to care for yourself, to be free from discrimination. And real-life struggles must be the starting point for the Green project. It is now time to reclaim the frame of freedom.

The conservative “frame” of freedom: fewer taxes, less government, individual responsibility. Freedom then becomes the absence of constraints, and a fierce attack against collective action. Suddenly, healthcare becomes tyranny and environmental protection becomes oppression.

Every word activates a mental frame. Say “fighting climate change” and you trigger conflict imagery. Say “protecting our living environments”, and you activate care and responsibility. Conservatives mastered this game decades ago, while progressives are just catching up.
