Hey @AAMers according to your website @pennmuseum is listed as "Accredited" and has taken a "Pledge of Excellence." How does detaining @intersectionist and @MxAbdulAliy over the remains of children in Penn's collection reflect your Code of Ethics and "Continuum of Excellence"?

I would also like to point to the hard work of @PMWU397 who recently won their fight for a union for the Penn Museum Workers. Museum networks need to make space for further unionization efforts, and support unionized staff during conferences.

@intersectionist @MxAbdulAliy #MCN2023 is being held at @pennmuseum where staff used the remains of two young victims of the 1985 MOVE bombing as teaching aids without the surviving family member’s knowledge or consent. Hosting at the Penn without addressing or condemning these ethical issues is unacceptable.

@intersectionist @MxAbdulAliy I would like to make a clarification about the above tweet, and apologize to @intersectionist and @MxAbdulAliy for citing their work without making clear what the issue is and my stance on it.

Museum networks and conferences have played a vital role in shaping our field in the past. What will their role be for us in the future?

Museum: #MuseumsAreNotNeutral and neither are conferences. Conferences pose an opportunity to discuss ethical issues, and to platform the voices of the workers. I want to take this time to highlight the work of @intersectionist and @MxAbdulAliy

Computer: We saw some truly creative virtual conferences during the pandemic. Now back in-person, the lack of a hybrid or digitally accessible model is not only a step backward - it is throwing away the germinated seeds of what could have been a real revolution in meeting models.

Networks should be leading the charge in systemic change for museums, not falling back on the same practices that make museums inaccessible to begin with. I still believe that conferences can lead the field; but the current pay-to-play model is not sustainable for anyone.

As more and more professional networks face declining numbers, they need to do some soul searching to decide what it is they are really offering to their members. The mass membership exodus is not a mystery - it is a wake up call.

Network: In a field where workers are chronically un-/under- paid, $850 is a prohibitively high cost for attendees and presenters. Conferences that are financially and logistically inaccessible create an echo chamber for voices that do not represent the majority of museum workers

The issues I outline here are not unique to MCN, but are endemic to the museum field as a whole today.

As of today, I am stepping down as co-chair of #MCN2023 I hope to use this opportunity to start a discussion about what museum workers really need from their networks and conferences (a thread)

"Reparation," "Repatriation," "Restitution," and "Return." This month, we focus on each of these often used words in an effort to better comprehend them and examine examples of each.

At opening session and showing up with curiosity. Will Laura Lott and AAM publicly announce what they have told the PN leadership in private? If not, here it is. As of June 1st, the 24 professional networks of AAM will be disbanded. #aam2023

At the risk of being called repetitive. Yes carrots come in six colours, no a white carrot is not a parsnip, and yes there is a carrot museum (just off line at the moment).
