And we’re certainly concerned about some of the policy decisions the X platform has made as it pertains to misinformation and hate speech—two really important concerns in the realm of sustainability, ethics, and climate justice.

We hardly feel the need to say “we’re leaving Twitter” because, well, Twitter doesn’t exist anymore. We’ve increasingly found that X isn’t quite the right place for the kind of nuanced and respectful conversations needed to drive sustainability forward.

The brand needs to implement measures to protect biodiversity in its supply chain, use less animal-derived materials, and most importantly, ensure its workers are paid a living wage.

📉 Overall rating: ASOS is rated “Not Good Enough” overall. For a company that “that cares for people, while working to reduce our impact on the planet”, ASOS still has a lot of work to do.

It does not use angora, fur, down, exotic animal skin or hair, but it still uses leather, shearling, and wool (it has a policy to source wool from non-mulesed sheep but doesn’t provide any evidence to verify its claims).

🐾 Animal welfare: ASOS a formal policy aligned with the Five Freedoms of animal welfare but few clear implementation mechanisms in place.

💼 Labour conditions: Almost none of its supply chain is certified by labour standards which ensure worker health and safety. But the most problematic issue, is that we found no evidence it ensures payment of a living wage in its supply chain when it can certainly afford it.

🌿 Environmental impact: The ASOS brand uses some lower-impact materials in its clothing, but there is no evidence it minimises textile waste when manufacturing its products. In addition, we found no evidence ASOS is taking actions to protect biodiversity in its supply chain.

Being transparent means publically publishing comprehensive data about your operations and working with third party standards and certifications. Not having influencers (paid or not) walk through one single facility and talk to a couple of people.

SHEIN keeps promoting overconsumption, at a rate that is inherently harmful to both people and the planet, and truly unsustainable.
