It was a cloudy, calm, warmish day yesterday. First week of school around here. So we went to the lake with the kids and grandkids for a "beach day." Best decision ever. We had practically the whole little lake to ourselves!.

The first novel I ever wrote was about a dragon. So, in honor of that manuscript, here are some of my favorite dragon picture books.

Sometimes I'm not sure which is worse, reading, "Not currently open to queries" or "This manuscript isn't right for our list." #AuthorLife #AmQuerying.

Life experiences, no matter how extraordinary or mundane, are a treasure trove of resources for the writer’s brain.

Do you like historical fiction that will break your heart and leave you longing for more? Then read THE SNOW FELL THREE GRAVES DEEP by Allan Wolf. You won't be sorry, but you might be sad. #ReadVerseNovels #HistoricalFiction

My son told me I should draw a whale. A realistic whale. Not one of the cutesy whale characters I drew in my sketchbook recently. So I drew this one and gave it to him for his birthday (framed):

Writing on the computer just doesn't have the same charm as writing in a notebook while outside sitting in the dappled shade.

My garden keeps inspiring ideas. I should spend more time out there, writing in my head.

This is your occasional reminder that you are never too old to read children's books, even when there are no children in sight to read them to.

I'm making progress on my latest novel in verse revision, but it's hard to know how much progress. I won't really know it's done until I get there.

Everyone should read middle grade fiction. Avoiding it because it's "for kids" is just silly.

One of my new favorite things to do is listen to an audiobook (usually MG) while working on an art project. These are my most recent listens, which I really enjoyed: #kidlit #audiobooks #mgfiction

When I open a book and am drawn into the world of Narnia, I can’t help but feel a little bit like how the Pevensie children must have felt upon returning to Narnia in Prince Caspian. Like I’ve been away far too long and am finally home. What books feel that way to you?.

You could be writing a future reader's favorite book. Good enough reason to keep going.
